Have you seen the Gatorade commercial where they set soccer clips to the tune of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”?

Does it just make you want to slap Gatorade out of someone's hand? Is nothing sacred to these sports drink people?

The Reds finally did what they should have been doing all along on Wednesday when they beat the Cubs, 3-2.

Eric Milton took the mound and provided his second consecutive solid start since coming off the DL. This time, though, the team managed not to be shut out so the two runs he allowed (earned) on six hits through seven and two-thirds innings held up for the win.

Todd Coffey took over for the last out in the eighth and the ninth, holding the Cubs hitless for the save. This was the official changing of the guard: Coffey's first appearance as the Reds' closer.

To sum up:
Cubs closer Ryan Dempster: 25 IP, ERA 3.60, 9 saves, 3 blown saves, salary $15.5 million over three years
Reds closer Todd Coffey: 30 IP, ERA 1.20, 2 saves, 0 blown saves, salary league minimum or thereabouts

Just sayin'.

The Reds drew first blood in the sixth inning when Ken Griffey, Jr. led off the inning with a home run. Austin Kearns walked two batters later and Scott Hatteberg singled to send Kearns to third. Edwin Encarnación was hit by a pitch. Jason LaRue grounded out to the pitcher to yield one run from the bases-loaded situation. For a change.

In the seventh, Ryan Freel led off the inning with a triple and Griffey singled him in two batters later to score the Reds' third and final run.

Hardly the offensive clinic you'd like to see the Reds put on, but an adequate effort from the boys behind Milton. Javier Valentín didn't even try to throw out any runners stealing left field this time, so double-bonus there.

The win brings the Reds record to 29-24, still second in the NLC and one of only two teams above .500 in the division. After an off-day Thursday, they try to increase the 2.5 game distance between themselves and the third place Houston Astros. Aaron Harang faces off against Wandy Rodriguez.

One of the pre-game segments that FSN does for the Reds is called “I Want Answers” in which they ask various player ridiculous questions to get their moderately humorous answers. In other words, it was custom made for RHM.

Last night's rendition asked players, if you could have a food or dish named after you, what would it be?

• Bronson Arroyo said the dish would be a hamburger because he eats more hamburgers than anyone he knows.
• Rich White's dish would be called “White's pasta plate” and would feature bow-tie pasta, ziti, and shells with meat.
• Ken Griffey Jr. responded with some non-food related ramblings that I didn't understand. Sounds like the best dish of them all.
• Austin Kearns wants named after him some “big country home cookin'.”
• Adam Dunn does have a dish named after him in a a Mexican restaurant in his home town. The chicken fajita nachos there are affectionately known as the “Adam Dunn nachos” so you'll want to be trying those the next time you're in Porter, Texas.
• Brandon Claussen lays claim to eggs, bacon, and wheat toast.
• Kent Mercker's namesake would be a grilled PB&J. They're so good, he claims, that that's all his kids ask for now, and that's a pain because they're harder to make than regular PB&J.
• Todd Coffey would apparently skip the Jell-o dish in favor of the mayonnaise and banana sandwhich

Jeff Piecoro, by the way, the FSN broadcaster who introduced the segment would be a lasagna. Yummy.

The Reds did the unthinkable on Tuesday by losing a game and a series to the woeful Cubs by a score of 3-8.

Brandon Claussen led the charge and was uncharacteristically good until the rain delay in the fourth inning. When it was all said and done, he allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and two walks through five innings pitched.

Rick White flagged in his inning of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits. Brian Shackelford, soon to be optioned to Louisville, gave up a hit and a walk before he notched a single out.

Justin Germano held the Cubs hitless but did surrender a walk in the seventh. Kent Mercker gave up a homerun (earned) in the eighth. He's looked not-so-sharp since his return from the DL.

In the second inning, Adam Dunn hit a double and Edwin Encarnación knocked him in two batters later. In the sixth inning, Ken Griffey, Jr. singled and Dunn doubled. Austin Kearns brought in Griffey on a ground out and Javier Valentín brought home Dunn on a single. And that's all the Reds would need for the humiliating defeat. The team only stranded six.

The loss brought the Reds' record to 28-24. They would finish out the series on Wednesday, sending Eric Milton to try to avoid the sweep against Carlos Zambrano.
