Reds Preseason Game Thread – 3/1 Reds vs Pirates in Bradenton
TO make up for that embarrassing Eric Milton Diary post, I have decided to begin a new Spring Training tradition here at Red Hot Mama. FOr those of you unfortunate souls who do not have MLB radio, I will serve as your ears and provide you with game highlights as they happen right here in the Diaries section.
So check in often and I'll keep you up-ro-date on what's happening.
According to C. Trent Rosecrans this is our lineup:
Freel CF
Phillips 2B
Encarnacion 3B
Dunn LF
Bellhorn 1B
Hamilton RF
Gonzalez SS
Ross C
Milton LHP
which is interesting because one of our insiders who saw the posted lineup provided us with the same lineup except he had Jeff Conine at 1B. So we have to assume a switch was made inserting Bellhorn instead of Conine. is the old man feeling rusty after striking out to Homer Bailey yesterday? Maybe, maybe. We'll try to find out for you.
Also, I listened to marty's final Hot Stove Report yesterday and to say he is high on Homer Bailey would be an understatement. He said the Reds would be “asses” not to include Bailey on the big league roster if he has a lights out Spring. he says he is mature beyond his years and is showing command with his offspeed pitches, which was the question mark. He is convinced if the Reds had had the guts to call him up last September the Reds would have made a legitimate run at the playoffs. He lobbied hard for him to be the #5 starter out of the gate.
he then later said Paul Wilson looked exceptional and fully recovered and said he belongs in the rotation too. So who does marty want out of the rotation. He didn't say, but I am guessing Eric Milton is his least favorite Reds pitcher. Maybe we'll get more on that from today's radio cast. And, this is Marty's first broadcast with his son Thom Brennaman, and also jeff Brantley will be making his debut as well.
STAY TUNED. More updates coming, posted as comments to this thread.
Also yesterday marty was raving about Alex Gonzalez’ defense. he said people in Cincinnati don’t know just how good this guy is defensively and they are going to be thrilled when they see him play… he’s gonna make the pitching staff a lot better.
May want to go with the bottled water for awhile:
BROOKPORT, Illinois (CNN) — As many as 8,000 gallons of a toxic solvent spilled into the Ohio River Wednesday after a barge hit an underwater dam, Coast Guard and Illinois state officials told CNN.
Lt. Wayne Chapman of the U.S. Coast Guard said the barge, owned by Kirby Marine, hit the wicket dam, which is a type of movable dam, near Brookport and began leaking cumene, a solvent used to produce other chemicals.
So far, officials said, there’s no threat to public drinking water. Water intake stations along the river have not reported finding the chemical in their systems, Chapman said.
The solvent floats on top of water and easily evaporates, he added.
Maggie Carson of the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency told CNN’s Fredricka Whitfield that experts are trying to determine the environmental impact of the spill.
“There’s a tremendous volume of water going through there, so there’s a dilution factor, and this will be taken into consideration as they try to take measures to contain it,” she said.
Kirby Marine is working to get another barge to the site to offload the rest of the cumene from the ruptured barge, Chapman said.
They say it evaporates easily, but call me skeptical. GO with the bottled water, folks.
Well I missed the first 9 minutes of the game, because MLB as usual has no clue as to how to make it easy to find the game.
But I am FINALLY lsitening to Marty!
Andrew McCuthen just homered off Milton…the very first thing I heard after the commercia. It was wind aided, according to THOM Brennaman. Marty “Well we’ve seen that before off Milton”. LOL!
Boy, I’ll tell you this.. THom Brennaman adds a huge degree of professionalism to the broadcast.. there is no dead air like I constantly heard with Steve and Marty.
Dunn just hit one over the scoreboard in left-center… Tie game, 1-1. Wind was NOT a factor on that one. Amrty got cut off in mid sentence while criticizing Dunn. That shut him up in a hurry!
Bellhorn K’d, Hamilton grounded out, AGON got on by way of error, and Ross grounded out. Reds 1, Pirates 1 headed to the bottom of the 2nd.
Another wind aided home run off of Milton by Hernandez.
McCutchen hits a double, Zach Duke (who singled) moves to third base. 2 on 2 out.
I’m listening via the MLB Audio. Amazing how difficult the web site makes it to find a product they’re offering for sale. Sheesh.
Anyway, I haven’t heard Thom much before, but when the feed loaded, he sounded almost identical to Marty. That could take some getting used to. (Although maybe not since FSN is televising so many games.)
Yea ddue, inititally it took me to the Pirates feed, and they had the wrong radio station..it was playing rock n roll… it took me like 10 minutes how to figure out how to get to the Reds broadcast.
To my ear Thom sounds a lot different, but yea, there is a similiarity in style and tone…both of them are play by play guys I think that is what is throwing you off…but Thom is doing color, but he’d doing it with a play-by-play style.
Milton got out of the jam… that should be it for him today. Saarloos is warming up. Reds down 2-1, top of the third.
Zeldink, feel free to contribute to this thread!
Freel hits a double down the 3B line… flirted with the idea of a triple but slammed on the brakes.
Freel steals 3B! Gotta love that guy. Spring training and he is stealing third.
Phillips and Encarnacion both ground out..Freel is stranded.
Correction: Paul Wilson is now on the hill.
Wilson gave up a leadoff single, but retired the next 3 batters, the last one via strikeout. Dunn leading off in the 4th.
Dunn draws the BB after falling behind 1 and 2.
BUBBA CROSBY into the game, running for Dunn.
Bellhorn K’s again. This guy is a bum… why is he playing?
Dustin Hermanson was signed. Interesting.
BREAKING NEWS!!!!
Reds just signed Dustin Hermanson to a minor league contract with an invite to spring training! Possible closer now in the mix.
Ah, you beat me by seconds, good job!
Clutch game tying base hit by Alex Gonzalez. Crosby scores.
I hope we see more hits than expected this year from Alex Gonzalez. I know he’s there for the glove, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he has a career year offensively at Great American.
It worked for Aurilia and Randa, right?
Wow, Ryan Freel misjudged a ball and it gets by him… Pirates now up 4-2. Matos hit his second home run of the game (I called him Hernandez by mistake earlier in the thread). Paul Wilson getting tagged.
Heading to the 5th.. maybe Wilson didn’t get tagged. It was another wind aided HR, and Freel committed the error. He got another K that inning.
Yea Zeldink, any offense supplied by AGON is a major plus. He was acquired for his glove, but as Thom B. pointed out, he did drive in close to 80 runs on 2 occasions in his career, and he’s always had good power. He may be a real big surprise and Kriv-dawg may have to get a lot of apologies for his offseason.
Brandon Phillips smashes one out, tied up 4-4 (Freel singled ahead of him).
Crosby flied out to RF.
Bellhorn “juiced one” while Brantley was bagging on him. 6-4.
Hey, the Reds have the lead!
I know that it’s only Spring Training and that the wind’s blowing out, but the offense is nice.
I do hope that scoring runs isn’t as much of a problem for this team as I expect it to be this year.
I think Phillips is gonna have a HUGE year for a 2B… he is the number 2 2B in the NL in my opinion, behind Chase Utley.
Keppinger with a wind-aided home run that caused Brantley and Marty to laugh their asses off. Now its 7-4.
Saarloos pitched two easy scoreless innings. NICE.
Crosby with a bloop double down the left field line.
Hamilton, long home run over the batters eye in CF…a towering 2 run home run. 9-4.
Cota doubles in a run off of Cormier. 9-5
Bases loaded, 2 out Crosby at bat…..
K
Coffey sprints out to the mound! 😀
Coffey launched a routine play over Votto’s head… runner at 2nd. 3rd error of the game.
Now a throwing error by Keppinger.
THANK YOU guys! I’m dying here at work with no access to the game.
CTS, could you promote this thread?
Reds got out of the jam, then went down in order… Bottom of the 9th and that kid Salmon pitching.
Jeepers, I guess the guys are rusty.
How was Milton? Not stellar, it looks like.
I heard him on the pre-game show a little, and he sounded like he didn’t want to talk. Personally, I’d *love* to hear him talk about what he’s done over the off-season to assure he’s going to be better this year, but he wasn’t doing much of that.
5th error of the game.. Votto boots a grounder. bases loaded NO OUTS! Oh-oh. Before this was a infield single and BB.
Milton was ok.. both home runs off him were wind aided. Wind blowing stron out to left.
Salmon just K’d a batter at 95mph. 1 out.
Ground out. Runner scores. 2 outs.
Marty: Soto in camp…has an aura about him…its almost regal.
