3/22 – Reds versus Yankees

It's the ultimate test of fidelity for BubbaFan: the Reds-Yankees game! Only not today, because Bubba's not starting, as you can see from these line-ups provided by C. Trent:

Reds
Ryan Freel CF
Josh Hamilton RF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Adam Dunn LF
Edwin Encarnación 3B
Javier Valentín 1B
David Ross C
Paul Janish SS
Kyle Lohse P

Scott Hatteberg was scratched with a groin injury, so today we'll be treated to the first-base-stylings of one Latin Love Machine. He's my favorite tiny little first baseman!

Wasn't Janish just sent down? They could have worked Bubba in in his place, darn it all.

Yankees
Melky Cabrera CF
Derek Jeter SS
Bobby Abreu RF
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Jason Giambi 1B
Jorge Posada C
Robinson Cano 2B
Kevin Reese LF
Carl Pavano P

Go Reds!

I’m on top of the world today because it’s my last day of work before vacation and my projects are all wrapping up very nicely. In case you were wondering why I’m using so many exclamation points!!

  2. smartelf says:

Today’s game is on FSN Ohio… SWEET!!!

  3. smartelf says:

Starting to look like Moeller is gonna make the team because as I sort of predicted, Javy is gonna get significant time at 1B this year, especially when you factor in Conine’s gimpiness.. that dude has been scratched like 5 times already.. and now Hatteberg too?

  4. BubbaFan says:

Dunno if Bubba is available to play today. He played in a minor league game yesterday, and they said he was expected back with the team today. But John Fay said the calf is still bothering him.

  5. smartelf says:

    Bases loaded, no outs.. DUNN!

  6. smartelf says:

broken bat flyout… Here is Edwin Encarnacion.

  7. smartelf says:

    6-4-3 double play… CRAP!

  8. BubbaFan says:

I can’t believe Pavano got out of that bases-loaded, no-outs jam.

    Jeter saved his bacon…

  9. smartelf says:

    Janish just launched a ball 10 feet over Valentin’s head… 1-0 Yanks.

  10. Zeldink says:

Did you hear Marty talking about the Reds attempt to sign Pavano when the Yankees ended up getting him?

Apparently the Reds offered more than the Yankees did, but Pavano signed with the bigger team. The same thing happened with Matt Clement signing with Boston that year.

Sounds like the Reds were quite fortunate, right?

Maybe. After those two spurned the team, the Reds signed Eric Milton.

  11. BubbaFan says:

I wonder if Pavano might have been okay if he came to Cincinnati. The knock on him is that he’s lacking in intestinal fortitude. Fairly or not, people think Pavano was too chicken to pitch in NY. Couldn’t take the pressure.

He falls on his butt trying to field a bunt in spring training, and “bruised buttocks” put him on the DL. For the entire season.

  12. BubbaFan says:

    Homer for El Comedulce.

  13. smartelf says:

Some guys show their true colors when they finally get paid. I don’t like Pavano and I am glad he doesn’t play for the Reds. Reds fans have ripped Milton and he has held up better than Pavano in New York. Anyhow I think the Reds have realized free agent pitching is like playing Russian Roulette… much better to reward your own guys who have already proven themselves.

  14. BubbaFan says:

I think that’s the conventional wisdom on how to build a team. Homegrown pitching, trade for position players if necessary.

  15. smartelf says:

Well this is my first look at hamilton and I exaggerate not when I say he looks WAY more polished than Austin Kearns despite not having faced pitching above the A level… he looks tremendous.

  16. Zeldink says:

I do hope Hamilton can continue his hot hitting once the season starts. He’s likely to be replacing, at least in part, Griffey’s bat in the lineup.

That’s a lot of pressure, even more so for a guy with his past.

  17. BubbaFan says:

Fay just posted this about Hamilton:
I was talking to a scout about him. “It’s no illusion. He’s that good. Great, gutsy pick by the Reds. He’ll cool off. But him cooled off is better than some guys red hot.”
18. smartelf says:

who committed that last throwing error?

  19. smartelf says:

Encarnacion looks clueless and awkward at the plate… I think Jacoby made a mistake tinkering with his mechanics.. that’s the kind of thing that gets you thinking too much.

  20. smartelf says:

Lohse just drove in two runs with a sqibber thru the hole on the right side. 5-2 yanks lead.

  21. Red Hot Mama says:

That’s too bad about EdE. His bat was the one thing he had.

  22. smartelf says:

tight hamsting for Valentin… Dunn may find himself at 1B again if this keeps up.

  23. Red Hot Mama says:

This is usually where I’d pipe in on my Griffey for First Baseman campaign, but we all know that Conine, Hatteberg, and Valetín will all be back before Jr!

  24. BubbaFan says:

    A bee attack??!

  25. Red Hot Mama says:

Oh no…the bees are mobilizing? I’ve always dreaded this day.

  26. smartelf says:

I don’t want to diss on Brook Jacoby… BUT how come the yankees get Don Mattingly as their batting coach? I mean, the Reds have had some GREAT hitters in the past, surely we could do better than Jacoby, whom I seem to recall was a mediocre player with like one good season that happened in 1987 when everyone thought the balls were juiced. I mean I hope Jacoby does good work with Dunn, but I don’t like the way Edwin looks so far.

  27. BubbaFan says:

Mattingly is not the Yankees hitting coach any more. He’s been made bench coach. He’s widely seen as being groomed to take over Torre’s job, possibly as soon as this year.

  28. smartelf says:

Dunn with another single. He does look much better. Edwin manages to ground out weekly to the right side to drive in a run on a fielder’s choice.

  29. Red Hot Mama says:

It’s going to be tough to say whether any change in Dunn would be due to Jacoby’s influence or his own resolve to shape up and buckle down.

  30. smartelf says:

Bellhorn Ks… rewind to first game of spring training: Why is Bellhorn on this team? He’s a bum.

  31. smartelf says:

All I can say is this team would be looking ALOT stronger if we had signed Craig Wilson, which everyone here seemed to be in favor of… clearly we have a hole at 1B when Bellhorn is getting ABs this late in the spring. I think the Conine signing may spell our eventual doom.

  32. BubbaFan says:

Well, according to Gameday, the second throwing error was on Lohse.

  33. Red Hot Mama says:

Where is Wilson now? Could we still get him? We could use a Thunder God in the line-up.

  34. smartelf says:

He’s with the Atlanta braves… I don’t think they even paid much for him either. Maybe he snubbed us, I don’t know… I think we wanted Delucci and he snubbed us.

  35. BubbaFan says:

Craig Wilson was signed by the Braves. For the same amount as Conine.

  36. Red Hot Mama says:

He played for the Pirates. The Reds would have to look *awesome* by comparison!

  37. smartelf says:

Yea but we TRADED for Conine… Free agents can choose who they play for… I don’t know if we made an offer for Wilson or not.. I know we tried for Delucci before trading for Conine, and he chose someone else.

  38. BubbaFan says:

I wonder if the Reds really tried to get Wilson. Everyone was expecting him to get a multi-year deal and/or $5 or 6 million a year. Which might have been more than they wanted to pay.

He ended up signing for one year, $2 million even. I guess the feeling was he was exposed in NY. He signed very, very late. There was even talk of his going back to Pittsburgh, even though they didn’t part on good terms and didn’t need a righty bat.

  39. Red Hot Mama says:

Are you guys getting to actually watch the game?

  40. smartelf says:

Yes the game is on FSN Ohio.

  41. BubbaFan says:

I’m watching on MLB.TV. It’s $15 for the off-season package, which includes spring training. Well worth it.

  42. smartelf says:

Well there’s somethin you don’t see every day… a strike out, a passed ball and a 2-5 put out.

  43. Red Hot Mama says:

Darn work keeps me from being anywhere I can catch the game. Though I guess without the job I wouldn’t get to see the next week’s worth of games in person, so I can’t complain too much 😉

I guess the bid for Extra Innings from the cable companies was rejected. Can you believe that the whole situation is being dragged in front of the federal government. The US takes its baseball very seriously.

  44. BubbaFan says:

I’m playing hooky today, or I’d be following the game via Trent’s blog.

  45. Red Hot Mama says:

That’s cool. Life’s too short to work all the time. 😎

  46. Red Hot Mama says:

Can a woman stuck at work get an inning/score update, por favor?

  47. smartelf says:

Big hit by Enrique Cruz cut the lead to 2. Its now 7-5 with bellhorn up and runners at the corners. Edwin just battled to draw a walk, but it was a good at bat. I think we are in the bottom of the 7th inning.

  48. BubbaFan says:

    It’s now 7-6.

  49. smartelf says:

Bellhorn drives in a nother run with a groundout fielder’s choice, so its now 7-6 Yanks lead heading to the 8th inning.

  50. Red Hot Mama says:

Great, thanks. Who is Enrique Cruz?
