Reds versus Brewers Again
This is crazy: not only am I putting up a game thread for the second night in a row but I've got the windows open while I do it. Finally. This is what baseball's supposed to be about.
Here's the line-ups. Thanks, C. Trent:
Reds
Ryan Freel 3B
Josh Hamilton CF
Adam Dunn LF
Ken Griffey Jr. RF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Scott Hatteberg 1B
Alex Gonzalez SS
Javier Valentín C
Matt Belisle P
Brewers
Rickie Weeks 2B
J.J. Hardy SS
Prince Fielder 1B
Bill Hall CF
Johnny Estrada C
Geoff Jenkins LF
Kevin Mench RF
Craig Counsell 3B
Dave Bush P
Two aboard for the Reds. I LOVE the start of this game.
Fan interference gets Griffey a double that otherwise would have gone off the wall. It’s a push, I guess.
Very weird run-down between second and third for Phillips there. Mark Berry made a bonehead move in changing the go sign to stop after Phillips had already overrun the bag. Brewers almost gave him the base back, though.
The Brewers’ defense is like the Reds’ circa 2006
It’s a lot more fun with a righty on the mound, I must say.
Reds up 0-2 after one inning, and I’m trying to eat while posting, in case you’re wondering why my content is so boring. My stupid commute didn’t get me home until 10 minutes before gametime.
Will the new house come with a shorter commute?
Bobby Livingston just hit double for Louisville. He’s hitting better than anyone else on the team these days. 😛
The one we put an offer in on today will come with a 3-minute commute for the CTS. It would be about 10-15 minutes for me, depending on traffic. Pretty significantly better than the 2 hours per day we’re currently spending in the car to carpool in.
Sounds great. Hope you get it.
A lot of experts are predicting record high gas prices this summer. Like, maybe $4 a gallon or more. Short commutes are good.
And jeez, it seems like they should have gotten more runs out of three singles, a double, and an error…
And given up fewer in the top of the second. 3-2 in the middle of the inning. The CTS points out that it is his first bad inning of the season.
Sigh. Is it too much to ask for good pitching and good hitting at the same time?
Javy beats out the throw! That’s how you do it, Griff.
Freel knock the LLM in. Now THAT’s how you do it!
w00t!!
You gotta love watching a guy score when he’s wider than he is tall.
Yikes. Belisle is going to be at 100 pitches in four innings at this rate.
Damn. You can’t step away to get yourself a drink without the Reds losing a lead in this game!
I think Bill Hall is our nemesis. 😛
Maybe if we ignore them, the Brewers will go away. How’s work treating you, BubbaFan?
Come on, Jr. Hit the homer for real this time.
The killer project from hell is done. No more overtime.
I might take a few days off and go stalk Bubba when the Bats come to Syracuse later this month. 🙂
The Yankees have scored 7 runs in the second inning. And the inning’s not over yet.
Congratulations on finishing the project. I hope that you enjoyed a toast!
Dang. I’d like to see the Reds score 7 in an inning. It seems like it’s been a long time.
RHM did you go 404 on us for a while ?
Hey, Narron learned! He’s taking Cormier out after he hit a guy but BEFORE he can load up the bases and give up the grand slam.
Yep. My host is streakier than David Ross.
Uh-oh, the Brewers’ bad defense is rubbing off on the Reds. Now if only their hitting would.
Brewers have the lead again. Ugh.
Keep it close, and I think we’ll be ok….
You may be on to something. The Reds DO get to bat last.
Ross PH
wouldn’t Saarloos have just as good a chance ?
I’d have put Moeller in instead.
Don’t forget Milton; he’s a decent little hitter.
This game is stressing me out. I’m going to take a bath, but I’ll be listening from the tub, glass of wine in hand. Red, of course.
Have a good bath, RHM. I hope it’s a sudsy one.
Wow. Dunn has had issues tonight. I hope he’s not already cooled off from his great start. Time for Jacoby to work his magic.
Sheesh. And Griffey strikes out looking, just like Dunn.
Hamilton is the only left to get a hit. Amazing.
I’m liking how the Brewers are trying to give the game to the Reds.
I just wish Javy had gotten the memo and wasn’t swinging at all the balls.
Attaboy, Javy!
Way to make up for those terrible swings!
9-5 Reds, thanks to a three run double by the Latin Love Machine.
A whole bunch of Latin Love there ! 9-5 Reds
Wow, RHM almost got what she wished for. Not a 7-run inning, but 5 ain’t bad…
The power of the sudsy water, I guess. Perhaps she should take a bath during all future Reds games.
Junior !!!! now 10-5
The Reds are piling on now against former Red Elmer Dessens. Phillips continues to crush Brewers pitching by tripling off the top of the center field wall.
11-5 Reds.
Lesson learned: RHM bathing is a good thing 😉
c’mon Coffey! Even a grand slam won’t lose this one (but let’s not try).
Why do they keep calling him “Shouse”? It’s clearly “S-house.”
[em]Ow! He’s an S…..house. He’s mighty mighty just lettin’ it all hang out.[/em]
Two away. Go Coffey.
And that’s it. Woo-hoo!
And Coffey got back on that horse.
Two games in a row where the offense existed. I hope that continues throughout the homestand and beyond.
It’s another RHP tomorrow. 🙂
Great game. I love to see the guys win, especially when Javy’s not looking to walk (unwise as that may be). Thanks for coming by, everyone. Sleep tight.
I was at the game and it was a lot of fun. Not much else to report except they had a couple hilarious scoreboard promos including a bunch of Reds wearing blond wigs and talking about Bronson Arroyo’s bobblehead… Imagine Jerry Narron in a long blond wig… I know you can’t and that’s why it was classic. Also, they have this thing called Mercker’s Hot Corner or something where he grills the players with inane questions… today he asked who spends the most time at the mirror and everyone voted for Hatteberg. As for the game, it is obvious to me that a big part of switching relievers goes way beyond the lefty-righty match up.. case in point, they bring in the right hander to face Phillips after the lefty Ks Dunn and Griffey and the righty proceeds to implode and kill the game… we saw this with the Cubs Ohlman in Cincinnati… managers need to be more patient with their guy… a proven commodity is better than an untested potential. You throw a new guy in to the game and you have no idea what to expect, the match ups be damned. That is why I don’t like seeing Narron burn pitchers after 1 batter.. if they look good and have command, ride them longer and screw the match up.
I had to go to a meeting tonight, so I missed it, but the place where the meeting was held has a satellite dish so I got to see highlights after the meeting. As I mentioned in the Freel thread elsewhere, Freel made the Brewers’ defense look really ridiculous in that fifth inning. Like the Reds’ defense last year.
Anyway, this was more what I expected when I was looking at the career records the two Brewers starting pitchers had against the Reds. Nice to see the Reds putting some crooked numbers on the board.
The RHP that BubbaFan mentioned is Chris Sampson. I’m concerned, because the Reds historically haven’t done well against unfamiliar pitchers, and this will be Sampson’s first career start against the Reds. In two relief appearances vs. Cinci he’s worked 8-1/3 innings, allowing six hits and a walk, a homer, and three earned runs, but he’s struck out eight.
On the other hand, Sampson hasn’t allowed an earned run yet this season, so maybe he’ll run out of good karma tonight against the Reds and finally get smacked around prior to getting yanked before the water in the showers at GABP is even warm. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Which is making it hard to type, so I’m outta here.
Yeah, I noted that over at RR. Sampson is what we in Yankeeland call an “URP.” An Unknown Rookie Pitcher. Very dangerous beasts, at least to the Yanks. They slap around Cy Young winners without even working up a sweat, but confronted with an URP, their all-star bats falter. It was a running joke last year: that any team facing the Yanks would be calling up three or four kids from the farm – as many URPs as needed to get through the series.
IMO, it’s more than a joke and more than just chance. The Yankees, and perhaps all of baseball, have become very dependent on scouting reports. You see the same thing with hitters. Kids just up from AAA blister the ball…then they start getting scouted, and they go into slumps. Andy Phillips looked amazing for about a month last year. Then they found the hole in his swing. 😛
Better Sampson than Roy Oswalt, that is all I can say. We have a scouting report on Oswalt and it goes something like this: Good Luck, you’re gonna need it.
Well Reds Reporter has the YouTube clip of the Arroyo Bobblehead promo… truly hilarious classic stuff.
Damn; the promo is sitting in my inbox too but I guess he beat me to it. That’s his benefit for not having a day job, I guess. 😛
