While waiting for this game to start – the Red Hot Mama Out-Of-Town Scoreboard shows that the Cubbies did us a favor today and knocked off the Cardinals, 6-0.
In other games involving the Reds’ NL Central rivals, Houston at Milwaukee should be starting soon, and the Pirates are at Los Angeles for a late west coast game against the Dodgers.
And play is under way in Cincinnati. Milton’s first pitch to Victorino is a strike.
2 unearned runs…dangnabbit !
In the top of the first for the Phillies: Victorino singles to right. Rowand fouls out to first. Rollins grounds one to third, everybody safe on a throwing error by EE. Utley doubles to center, scoring both runners. Burrell flies to right. Helms does too. Philles 2, Reds coming to bat.
In the bottom of the first: Freel strikes out looking. Dunn strikes out swinging. Phillips struck out looking. Reds have not gotten off to a very good start. At the end of an inning, they trail, 2-0.
On the RHM Out-Of-Town Scoreboard, Houston has jumped out to 1-0 lead over Milwaukee on a solo shot by Ensberg leading off the second inning.
The Phillies’ half of the second: Nunez grounds to second, Barajas pops out to first, Hamels grounds out to first.
That’s more like it.
And Conine cuts the Phillies’ lead in half! YES!
He’s still a Phillie-Killer. Excellent!
Bottom of the 2nd: Conine homers to left. Gonzalez strikes out swinging. Hamilton grounds out to second. EE strikes out swinging. Phillies 2, Reds 1.
Redsfan68: They scored those as earned runs charged to Milton.
nice DP by reds !!
Top of third: Victorino, infield single to short. Rowand hits into the 6-4-3 DP. Rollins out 6-3. Two shutout innings in a row for Milton, I wonder if that’s a new record.
:hehe:
Yes, nice to see them turn the DP.
Ross walks, Milton bunts him to second. Freel fouls out to first, Dunn strikes out swinging, still 2-1, Phillies as we head to the fourth inning.
Nice bunt by Milton, too bad it went to waste. 😥
A 2-run HR by J.J. Hardy has put the Brewers ahead of the Astros, 2-1, after three innings of play at Miller Park in Milwaukee.
And in the top of the fourth in Cinci, Utley grounds to second and Burrell flies to center. Milton gives up back-to-back singles to Helms and Nunez, but punches out Barajas swinging to escape the jam.
Reds’ Fourth: Phillips flies to center. Conine looks at strike three. Gonzalez swings at strike three. Phillies 2, Reds 1 after four.
So far this has to be Milton’s best outing of the season.
Top of Fifth: Milton gets Mahels on a come-backer. Victorino flies to center. Rowand flies out to center. That’s four pretty solid innings in a row for Milton against his former club.
Now if only his current club could give him some run support.
Brewers tacked on another run in the fourth on a sac fly by Tony Graffanino and now lead the Astros, 3-1.
And the Reds are threatening here in the fifth!
Ohh, come on!
I think they sent the wrong guy to Louisville.
Hamilton walks, EE singles to center, and then Ross hits into a 5-4-3 triple play. Unbelievable.
In the Phillies’ half of the sixth, Rollings out 5-3. Utley homers. Burrell flies to center. Helms out 6-3. It’s now Phillies 3, Reds 1. Milton due to lead off for the Reds in their half of the inning, I expect we’ll see a pinch-hitter.
Yep, Hopper will bat for Milton.
Christ on a cracker. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a triple play before.
Hopper pops out to first for Milton. Freel flies to right. Dunn doubles. Phillips swings at strike three. 3-1 Phillies as we head to the 7th.
Brewers have added two more runs in the fifth and are still batting, they lead Houston 5-1.
You know, I don’t think I have either…seen a TP that is.
Santos now pitching for the Reds, he gets Nunez 4-3 to start the seventh.
And it looks like the Astros’ winning streak will end tonight as the Brewers now lead that game, 6-1.
As Barajas singles to left for the Phillies.
Well, the much-maligned Milton didn’t do too badly.
The bullpen is being way overused, though.
Cool! Ross guns down Barajas trying to steal second, and Santos punches out Hamel on a swinging third strike. Phillies are gone in the seventh.
That’s easily Milton’s best game this year. Too bad it’s apparently going to go down as another L.
Reds 7th: Conine swinging K, Gonzalez 5-3, Hamilton swinging K.
That triple play is the first turned against the Reds since the Padres did it back on May 19, 1997, according to sabr.org
…and is the Phillies’ first triple play since they turned one on Sept. 20, 1992 against the Pirates, which was an unassisted triple play by Phillies’ 2B Mickey Morandini.
An unassisted triple play? How does that work?
And while I was looking that up, Rowand homers and the Reds now trail 4-1.
The Alex Madrid factor.
Morandi made all three outs himself. Only two second basemen in history have ever made an unassisted TP, Morandini and Randy Velarde. In Morandini’s case, it says, he caught Jeff King’s liner for the first out, stepped on the bag to retire Andy Van Slyke, and tagged Barry Bonds who was running from 1B to 2B. Side retired.
The Philly 8th: Victorino flies to left center, Rowand homers, Rollins swinging K, Utley 6-3.
Whoa, EE!
Reds’ Eighth: EE singles to left. Ross swinging K. castro bats for Santos, another swinging K. Freel singles to right, EE to third. And the Reds have the tying run at the plate, Adam Dunn.
Third swinging K of the inning for the Reds, still 4-1 Phillies heading to the ninth. 🙁
I hope the concert was good, because this game sure hasn’t been.
Saarloos pitches a 1-2-3- ninth for the Reds: Burrell flies out to center. Helms grounds out 5-3. Nunez grounds out 4-3. And it’s do-or-die time for the Reds.
Hey, HMZ, have you ever been to the Syracuse Chiefs’ ballpark? I have a workshop in Syracuse next week, and I’m thinking of going out a day or two early to see the Bats while they’re in town.
Bourn is now in LF for the Phillies.
Phillips goes down hacking.
Conine 6-3. Down to the final out.
Gonzalez flies to center, Phillies win it, 4-1.
Final look at the RHM Out-Of-Town Scoreboard: Astros got three in the seventh, Brewers lead that one by 6-4. I’m going to grab something to eat.
BubbaFan: Sorry, didn’t mean to ignore you, I had soup on the stove and it was about to boil over.
No, I’ve never been to the ball park in Syracuse. I usually wait for the Chiefs , and the Bats for that matter, to come to Buffalo and catch ’em while they’re playing the Bisons.
Only saw the Bats here once last year, though. It was pretty much like watching the Reds play, they struck out a lot, committed three errors, and the Bisons slapped a four-spot on Shackelford in the eighth to win it.
It’s like that this year, too. A lotta strikeouts, a lotta errors, good starts that are blown by the bullpen.
The other day, Bailey left with a 2-1 lead after five innings. Majewski promptly gave up six runs, including a grand slam.
Call him up, he’s ready. 😛
