May 6: Reds Try To Avoid Sweep
RHM is apparently at the game, so I'm pinch-blogging. Here are the starting lineups:
Reds:
Ryan Freel 2b
Scott Hatteberg 1b
Ken Griffey Jr. rf
Edwin Encarnación 3b
Adam Dunn lf
Alex Gonzalez ss
Josh Hamilton cf
David Ross c
Bronson Arroyo p
Rockies
Willy Taveras CF
Troy Tulowitzki ss
Matt Holliday lf
Todd Helton 1b
Garrett Atkins 3b
Brad Hawpe RF
Chris Iannetta c
Jamey Carroll 2b
Josh Fogg p
So far, the Reds are 0-2 this season when I've started the game thread, so today I'm hoping for them to snap not one, but two losing streaks.
Arroyo (2-2) the winner, Fogg (1-3) the loser, and Weathers gets a save, his sixth.
Hamilton leads the way going 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs. Freel, Hatteberg, Griffey, and Ross also had two hits each for the Reds. Freel scores three runs, Gonzalez two.
Yep, the pen held onto one for a change. 😉
It should be noted though, that Hawpe’s ball off Stanton was probably at least a double, but Hamilton robbed him with a great catch.
That’s the Reds’ first save since April 17.
Correction, April 15.
Two triples in one inning (in the eighth) – first time since June 29, 2000 against the Cardinals.
Freel at 2B – first time starting there since July 5.
Arroyo, first career win vs. the Rockies.
Cool beans. Hope RHM had a good time at the game!
I was there hoping like hell the bullpen wouldn’t disappoint again. What a game by Hamilton. This guarantees him an all star spot in my mind. Everybody write him in on the ballot. He had 2 home runs, a terrific throw to gun down Taveres at 3rd and a brilliant catch to bail out Stanton in the 8th.
Its funny I feel real confident in David Weathers when he is operating with a 5 or 6 run lead.
Maybe we can string some wins together and get back into this thing.
I hope so, smartelf. The pen blew their last three save opportunities before nailing one today. For once I was actually glad to see Captain Hook, when he came out to get Stanton.
Thanks for doing the game thread, HMZ. You’re a hell of a pinch blogger.
I was at the game–the Bats were in Indy. It was also a good one for the Reds’ organization, with the Bats winning 8-1. Tom Shearn pitched a good one, allowing just one run on five hits through seven innings and striking out eight. He also pitches out of the bullpen, I understand.
