So far, the Reds are 0-2 this season when I've started the game thread, so today I'm hoping for them to snap not one, but two losing streaks.
While waiting for the game to start, here’s a look at the RHM Out-Of-Town Scoreboard for games involving the Reds’ NL Central rivals:
In Milwaukee, it’s the Brewers leading the Pirates 2-0 and still batting in the fourth inning.
Houston is batting in the fourth and leads the Cardinals in St. Louis, 1-0.
The Cubs are hosting the Nationals, that game’s scoreless with the Nats batting in the fourth.
We’re under way in Cinci.
Arroyo starts things off right with a swinging strikeout of Taveras. Yay! 😉
OK, the top of the first: Taveras K, Tulowitzki 6-3, Holliday 5-3, and the Rockies are gone in order.
Brewers now lead Pirates 4-0, and Nationals now lead Cubs 1-0.
The Reds half of the first inning: Freel 5-3. Hatteberg singles to right. Griffey singles to center, Hatteberg goes to second. EE pops up to the first baseman. Dunn walks, bases loaded. Gonzalez hits into fielder’s choice with Dunn being forced out at second.
Cardinals now lead the Astros, 3-1. And the Cubs/Nats are tied at 1-1.
Colorado in the second inning: Helton whiffs. Atkins flies to right. Hawpe pops out to Eddie, Rockies go down 1-2-3. Yay!
The umpires for today’s game are as follows:
HP – Larry Vanover
1B – Greg Gibson
2B – Tom Hallion
3B – Charlie Reliford
The Cinci Second: Hamilton 4-3. Ross singles to left center. Arroyo forces Ross at second, fielder’s choice. Freel walks. Hatteberg bounces one over the wall in center, scoring Arroyo and sending Freel to third as the Reds take a 1-0 lead. Rockies want no part of Griffey and walk him intentionally, loading the bases. Encarnacion walks unintentionally, forcing in Freel for a 2-0 lead. Dunn looks at strike three.
At the end of two innings, Reds lead it, 2-0.
On the Red Hot Mama Out-Of-Town Scoreboard:
Brewers 4, Pirates 0 with the Pirates batting in the 7th.
Cardinals 3, Astros 1 with the Astros batting in the 6th.
Cubs 2, Nationals 1 with the Nats batting in the 6th.
The Yankees have beaten Seattle, 5-0. Now maybe BubbaFan will show up so I won’t have to talk to myself the rest of the afternoon.
Another 1-2-3 inning for Arroyo in the top of the third, including a swinging K of Carroll. So far, Bronson’s cruising. Yay!
Meanwhile, Josh Fogg has pitched like Boss Hogg. The Reds have loaded the bases in each of the first two innings. He’s done everything but give up a homer.
And Gonzalez fixes that leading off the bottom of the third. It’s 3-0, reds.
After Gonzalez’ leadoff dinger Hamilton grounds out to first, Ross goes down hacking, and Arroyo grounds out to second, so at the end of three, it’s the Reds up by 3-0.
Top Half Of 4th: Taveras walks, there goes Arroyo’s perfecto. Tulowitzki singles, there goes Arroyo’s no-hitter. But Taveras tries to take third on the play and Freel guns him down. Tulowitzki takes second on the throw. Arroyo punches out a swinging Holliday and Helton fouls out to EE. Still 3-0, Reds.
The Pirates have tied it with the Brewers with a four-run seventh. It’s 4-4 at Miller Park with The Brew Crew batting oin the bottom of the 7th.
In Cinci, Freel leads off the home half of the fourth with a walk.
Hatteberg almost makes it 6-0, but it’s a fly out to deep center. Griffey looks at strike three. So does EE, but before he does, Freel steals second.
Reds lead, 3-0, after four complete innings of play.
C’mon, Reds. We need a bullpen-proof lead.
I also notice I typed “Freel” when talking about Taveras getting gunned down at third on Tulowitzki’s fourth-inning single. Sorry, my bad. I should have typed “Hamilton” instead. So credit Joltin’ Josh with the outfield assist, rather than Flyin’ Freel.
In the Rockies’ fifth, Atkins leads off with a single, but Hawpe fouls out to Ross, and Arroyo strikes out the next two guys, so halfway through the game, the Reds still hold a 3-0 lead.
It is at this point when they need to gag and hogtie Narron. Just sayin’.
Howdy BF, I was expecting you. 😀
Steve Finley now playing CF for the Rockies as Dunn leads off the bottom of the fifth by grounding out to first. And A-Gone will come to the plate.
A-Gone homered his last time up, and this time he’s hit by the pitch. That should get Fogg tossed. It doesn’t. Good thing. Hamilton homers, reds take a 6-0 lead.
Er, 5-0 lead. I need a new keyboard or new fingers.
And that’s how the inning ends as Ross singles and gets doubled up on Arroyo’s fly to center. 🙁
But the Reds take a 5-0 lead into the sixth.
Baker will bat for Boss Hogg.
Ruh-roh. Arroyo’s in a jam.
C. Trent says the reason for Finley in center is that Taveras left with right groin tightness. Getting gunned down by Hamilton on that play at third had to be a real kick in the…well, never mind.
Brewers 6, Pirates 4 (Final)
Rockies’ 6th: Baker bats for Fogg, grounds out 4-3. Finley doubles. Tulowitzki walks. Holliday singles. Helton singles, scoring Finely and Tulowitzki. Atkins looks at strike three. Wild pitch moves the runners up, second and third with two out for Hawpe. Hawpe walks, loading the bases for Iannetta. That’s gonna do it for Arroyo, here comes Saarloos.
Mabry bats for Iannetta, singles home Holliday and it’s now 5-3.
Carroll hits into a fielder’s choice, forcing Mabry at second, and the Reds finally get out of it. They still hold a 5-3 lead and have the top of the order due up in the home half of this sixth inning.
Yay, Freel!
Ruh-roh. I thought I was the only one who remembered the dog in The jetsons saying that.
Tom Martin will start the bottom of the sixth on the hill for the Rockies. He has a 4.63 career ERA against Cinci and the Reds have hit .333 off of him.
Home run, Ryan Freel! Reds up by 6-3. Yay!
Was it the dog in the Jetsons? I thought it was Scooby-Doo.
But I’m not a TV expert. My mom never let me watch much TV, and I never really got into the habit. Except sports. 🙂
Hatteberg flies to center. Griffey doubles and goes to third on EE’s groundout, but Dunn flies out. After six, it’s 6-3, Reds.
FINAL: Cardinals 3, Astros 1.
Cubs/Nationals are tied at 3-3 in the tenth inning.
Yeah, that was the dog in The Jetsons, whose name was Astro.
Scooby Doo and Muttleyfrom dastardly and Muttley in Their Flying Machines used to do that too, later, but Astro was the first.
Same actor did the voices for all three…guy named Don Messick.
For the Rockies in the seventh, Torrealba, who came in as the catcher for the Rockies to start the bottom of the sixth, grounds out 6-3. Finley walks. Tulowitzki walks. Hey, guys, that white thing buried in the dirt over there in front of where the catcher is? It’s called ome plate, try to throw the ball over it once in a while.
🙁
Fortunately, Saarloos gets Holliday to hit it to A-Gone. Over to second, got one there; Over to first…got a pair! It stays 6-3, Reds.
The new pitcher for the Rockies: Alberto Arias, who has previously worked 1/3 of an inning against the Reds in his career.
He gets Gonzalez to fly out to center, then Hamilton makes it 7-3 with a solo shot to right. Yay!
😀
Ross out 6-3. Hopper bats for Saarloos and is also out 6-3. But the Reds lead it, 7-3, after seven innings.
If Stanton comes out to start the eighth, I’m going to hurl.
Ugh. It’s getting worse. It’s Weathers…
Warning: The following are the details of Mike Stanton pitching in the eighth inning of a Reds game. This material may not be suitable for small children. Parental discretion is advised.
Helton singles to right.
Atkins grounds into FC, forcing Helton at second.
Hawpe lines out to deep center.
Quintanilla bats for Arias and singles, Atkins to third.
Here comes Captain Hook, Weathers will come on.
Weathers whiffs Carroll. Yay! The Reds made it through the eighth inning and still lead it, 7-3.
FINAL: Cubs 4, Nationals 3 (10)
So we can put the RHM Out-Of-Town Scoreboard to bed. The Cardinals, Cubs, and Brewers win today, the Astros and Pirates lose.
In Cinci, it’s 7-3 Reds, with Jeremy Affeldt on the mound for the Rockies in the bottom of the eighth.
Quintanilla stays in the game at 2B for the Rockies.
Freel greets Affeldt with a triple to deep center. Conine bats for Hatteberg and delivers Freel with a sac fly, it’s 8-3.
Griffey flies to left. Encarnación walks. Dunn works the count full, then hammers one for a triple to right, scoring Encarnación. Gonzalez grounds out 5-3.
At the end of the eighth inning, it’s the Reds on top, 9-3.
Weathers on the mound with a six-run lead. It’ll be Torrealba and then back to the top of the order for Finlet and Tulowitzki.
Freel is in center, Conine’s at first, Castro’s at second, and Hamilton’s in left field.
Torrealba looks at strike three. Second strikeout for Weathers. One out.
Finley lines out to left center. Two away.
And this one belongs to the Reds!
Tulowitzki flies to right. Reds win it, 9-3.
The bullpen doesn’t blow a lead. Reds win!
And there was much rejoicing…
