May 19, Reds vs. Indians

Had to teach a class in the late afternoon, just got home. Batter late than never. Lineups:

Josh Hamilton was rushed to the hospital with gastroenteritis early this morning, was released later and returned to the team hotel. He's apparently not at the ballpark.
We pick things up with the Indians leading, 1-0, on Travis Hafner's first-inning solo shot off Belisle.
Reds second: Phillips, leadoff single. Conine, RBI double. We’re tied at 1-1.
Jeremy Sowers, a former Reds draft choice who never signed with the Reds, is the starting pitcher for the Indians. I better get that in now because he’s been getting kocked around lately, and may not last long.
Then again, this is the Reds he’s pitching to today.
Gonzalez HBP, Keppinger flies to center, Conine takes third. Ross up.
Um…I mean *knocked* around. And I can’t edit comments. 🙁
Ross gives it a ride to deep left, but he’s out. It’s 1-1 in the middle of the second.
On the Red Hot Mama Out-Of-Town Scoreboard, here’s the skinny on the Reds’ NL Central competition:
Pittsburgh is hosting Arizona, they’re tied at 1-1 in the second.
Cubs beat White Sox 11-6.
Cardinals trail Tigers, 2-0 in the second inning at Detroit.
Astros are at home against the Rangers, no score in the second.
Brewers are at home against the Twins and trail 2-1 in the second.
Cleveland in the second: Nixon singles to center. Peralta is retired 5-3, Nixon to second. Dellucci fouls out to Keppinger, runner holds. Garko singles to center – and Nixon is gunned down at the plate!

For the Reds in the top of the third: Freel grounds out to first. Hopper doubles. Griffey walks. With Phillips batting, Hopper steals third. Phillips hits a three-run bomb to left. Reds lead, 4-1.
Hey, RHM! So that’s how come Phillips homered. The good luck charm is inna house!
Indians’ Second: Barfield singles. Sizemore singles, Barfield to second. Blake grounds into FC forcing Sizemore at second, Barfield goes to third. Hafner walks, bases loaded for Martinez.
Ah, the Indians bring in a couple more. These are the Reds *I* know.
According to medicinenet.com, Gastroenteritis is an inflammation of the stomach and small and large intestines, caused by a virus, symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, and possibly headache, fever, and abdominal cramps. Symptoms begin 1-2 days following infection and may last for 1 to 10 days, although most episodes last from 1-3 days.
Told him not to drink the water in Cleveland.
Weird the stomach and intestinal problems going around this season.
Pirates get 5 in the 3rd and lead the D-Backs, 6-1.
Tigers lead the Cardinals, 6-1, in the fourth. Astros are up 1-0 over the Rangers in the fourth, and the Twins lead The Brew Crew 3-1 in the sixth.
Object lesson for Bronson Arroyo: That’s what you’re supposed to do with a comebacker when there are runners on base. 1-6-3 DP, inning over.
Between the guys with tummy troubles, the guys going on the DL, and the guys going on the bereavement list it’s a wonder the Reds can field a team at all. I’d say “what’s next?” but I’m afraid to ask.
The Indians sandwich several groundouts around a Barfield single, and at the end of four the Reds still have a 4-3 lead.
Time for the Reds to bat around, knock Sowers out of the box, and score half a dozen runs.
No such luck. Three up, three down.
But that’s only the half of it, folks. :plain:

Fly ball, single, 5-4-3 DP, and the Indians are gone in the fifth. Still 4-3.
OK, here comes the Reds’ big inning.
Well, they get off to a good start as Conine singles and Dunn walks, but then Gonzalez flies to center and Keppinger hits into a FC. First and third, two out for Ross.
Oh no: a Ross homer only makes it MORE likely that we’ll see catcher number four.
And Ross drills a three-run shot to center!
Reds 7, Indians 3.
LOL! Yeah, Narron will want Ross to be on the bench so he can use him as a picnh-hitter at any point during the game. 🙁
Boo home run! Boo base hit!
But of course, he’ll still send Castro up there instead.
Belisle finally gets his first strikeout of the game in the sixth inning.
So naturally, Narron immediately takes him out after 78 pitches, and Coutlangus will work to Grady Sizemore.
Dellucci steals second. But Coutlangus gets Sizemore on a grounder to Keppinger and the inning is over. Reds 7, Indians 4.
While we’re in the seventh inning stretch, let’s check the RHM Out-Of-Town Scoreboard and see how our division rivals are doing.

Sowers is done for the day. Guy-I-never-heard-of named Edward Mujica now pitching for Cleveland. He gets Hopper on a fly ball to center. Strikes out Griffey swinging, likes that rush so much he does the same to Phillips.
Coutlangus stays in for the Reds. Gets Blake on a comebacker. Gets Hafner to ground out to ‘Nine over at first. Goes to a full count on Martinez. Grounder to Keppinger to retire the side.
That’s worth a “Yay!”

Reds eighth: It’s still Mujica on the hill for Cleveland. Conine lines out to Peralta. Dunn walks again. Gonzalez strikes out swinging. Keppinger pops out to first. Here comes the dreaded eighth inning for the Cinci bullpen. <cringe>
Whoo! The closet with the photo albums is all packed up now…[em]that’s[/em] a dusty job!
So what’d I miss? Surely the Reds have given up the lead by now, right? No?

I guess that’s it for Coutlangus, and without seeing him pitch, I guess that seems reasonable. After walking the first batter in the eighth, there’s no need to let him get himself into trouble.
But Coffey? C’mon Todd. Demonstrate that you’ve gotten enough rest!
Coutlangus walks Nixon to lead it off, and in comes Coffey.
Your feed’s ahead of mionje, apparently.
But yeah, Coffey…I’m crossing my fingers, toes, eyes…
Oh, and in the cursed eighth inning. Even scarier! But he’s gotten an out so far…

Baker? Yikes. Girardi’s available and certainly has a better recent track record.
Dammit, Weathers.
Not that I’m in favor of Baker – I shudder to think of the havoc he’d wreak on this pitching staff – but Girardi’s never managed in a World Series.
I say bring Jack McKeon back.
I’d say that about anyone with some actual experience would be superior than just hiring the stopgap guy that you promote after firing the last guy.
