Game Thread: Opening Day
Hanging out online during games with the Cards to make jabs at Tony LaRussa’s sunglasses and Albert Pujols’ superiority complex is an age-old tradition here at RHM. But never have we had the opportunity to poke Opening Day fun at the Redbirds. The only thing that could make this any better would be if Jim Edmonds were still hanging around in a half-shirt.
Don’t know if anyone else is likely to show up, seeing as all of Cincy is probably downtown right now and Bellyscratcher will be relishing the parental joy of baby’s first Opening Day, but you can check out my one-sided commentary after the fact, in case, for some reason, you can’t remember any parts of it.
Yeah buddy! Hell of a play by Phillips to throw out Carpenter from his seat in the dirt
A little warmer than 79??
Oh, HELL YEAH Votto! Nice snag to end the inning and strand Yadi.
RM65, I suppose I should have said, “a little predictably warmer.” I’ve taken an infant to the park in April before, and you want to know for darn sure it’s going to be warm enough before you do!
Holy cow, Johnny Bench will be in the booth before you know it. He’s way better than Thom, and they’re down to only about 20 broadcasters to choose from.
Very true, after all just look at what the weather was last year on Opening Day.
One of these days, the fake Pujols injury just before the season starts will be real.
I’m not sure about this Cabrera guy at short. He might hit better than soft-J, but I wouldn’t mind seeing a play actually made on the third-base side of second.
I wish they hadn’t put Mike Lincoln in. I’m afraid he may reprise Rick White’s “White Flag of Surrender” role this year.
Herrera and the super-flat bill on his cap strikes out Rasmus. It’s about time!
That’s either a very large man or a very small saxophone playing God Bless America.
Freese is (I *think*) the guy we got when we traded Jimmy to the Padres.
Ah, Big Sweat is in for the Cards.
Lemme see what Steve has going this spring. I’m going to have to go back to work pretty soon. We could also come out for a Reds/not Cardinals series.
We could really mix it up and you could come out for a Bats/Indians series in Indy. The starting rotation the Reds have in AAA Louisville is better than the Cincinnati starting rotation has been for the last 5 years.
Jason Motte is not good on Opening Days.
Juan Fransisco: a modern-day Wily Mo Pena. I sort of miss that type.
What’s up with all the shaved heads on the Cards?
C’mon, Cabrera, step into that pitch! I wana see Votto.
Phew. I feel like we need some more runs to be safe here. The bullpen is not reliable.
I dunno about the shaved heads – last year they all grew mustaches. Only Brendan Ryan kept his all year but he’s a “free spirit.”
Well, thank goodness we were spared the ‘staches.
I wish the bottoms of thee innings were lasting a little longer. Seems like every time I look up the Cardinals are batting.
Joey Votto strikes out swinging? Brandon Phillips walks?? What bizarro world am I in?
And Rolen smacks it past the third basemen. Love it.
Oh jeez. Get it together guys.
Oh man, Jay Bruce goes down swinging. Who’s next? Drew Stubbs, keep this going!
Sweet, we’re in a tornado watch.
Stubbs is a fast mo-fo. w00t!
I guess that’s April for you.
GAB has sushi? What kind of back-water burg do I live in??
My gawd, George Grande isn’t even *in* the booth and they found a way to mention Jim Edmonds. What is the fixation??
Thank goodness Dave McKay is there to point to the first base bag.
I haven’t tried the sushi yet, of course, and I’m a little afraid. Ohio isn’t any less landlocked than Missouri.
Yeah, it’s probably a tier below grocery store sushi, but still. We just got garlic fries here.
I love a good rundown.
I wonder if you can get Cincinnati chili on the sushi. I wouldn’t put it past them.
Me too.
Oh, Yadi. Oh, oh, oh, Yadi.
Youch. I thought Lincoln was the worst pitcher we were going to see today!
There were a lot of tools out there who were saying that Harang was going to get lit up today, saying Arroyo should have been starting.
Even if Arroyo himself hadn’t been the one to say he didn’t want opening day, I say we would have been looking at 11 on the bad side of the scoreboard in the third if he had.
But my disregard for Arroyo aside, Masset won’t have many chances. The pitching is too deep to put up with this nonsense.
Last round up time for the Reds. C’mon LaRussa, give us a shitty hurler!
We have those. Like Franklin, our “closer.” Blech, I have no faith in him.
Well, the good news is that a performance like this does nothing to enhance the reputation of Dusty Baker.
We will actually be in attendance for the game on Wednesday, so we may or may not be posting to a game thread. I’ll have my phone, but I’ll also have beer…so who knows.
Enjoy the game!! I completely understand if you’re not able to make it to the game thread – baseball & beer > internet.
Arroyo pitches much better in night games anyways. So naturally Dusty has him starting a day game.
Volquez probably would have been the starter today if he hadn’t have blown out his elbow.
OK, I’m off to play catch with my kiddo. Enjoy Baby’s First Opening Day Win, Ms. Scratcher.
And heaven help Volquez return quickly 🙂
Beer and the internet are generally not a good combination.
You mentioned Castellini’s rage issues…. probably true, he has some ethics issues to deal with as well… they seem to take a back seat to when it comes to stuffing his billfold.
