The Daily Brief: Reds start off right against Brewers

Last Game
The Reds took the first game in the series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Bronson Arroyo gave up only one run before his team came to support him to the tune of 5 runs. They tacked on one more in the ninth to make the final score 6-1.

Next Game
The Reds continue the series with the Brewers at 8:10 p.m. ET. Homer Bailey (1-2, 3.77 ERA) takes the mound for the Reds against Yovani Gallardo (1-3, 5.79 ERA).

What a Relief
The Reds bullpen leads the National League. It hasn’t given up a run in 8 games (23 1/3 innings).

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
The Reds’ pitchers’ 17 strikeouts in Sunday’s game tied the franchise record for strikeouts in a 9-inning game. The last time that many Ks were recorded in 9-innings was May 23, 2008 when Edison Volquez and crew did it against the Padres.

Cairo off DL; Harris on the outs

UPDATE: Looks like it’s confirmed now: Harris has been outrighted to AAA Louisville. We’ll see if he accepts the assignment, but I doubt there’s a lot of other options for him right now. A little time with the minors might be a good chance for him to find his swing.

Cairo off the DL?John Fay is reporting an officially unconfirmed but seemingly likely scenario: that Miguel Cairo has come off the DL and that Willie Harris got the short end of the making-room-on-the-roster stick:

Willie Harris was walking out of Miller Park as I walked in a little bit ago. I asked him if something had happened. He shook his head yes. He was talking on the phone. The Reds haven’t announced anything, but it likely means Miguel Cairo has been activated from the disabled list and will take Harris’ roster spot.

If this is the case, it’s surprising to me, in that it is likely the same move I would have made. I expected Todd Frazier to be the odd man out, as he has been before.

Dusty Baker did give Harris a chance to prove himself. Harris had 35 ABs in 19 games, making appearances as a surprising choice for pinch hitter, given his .086 average and .135 OBP.

The Daily Brief: Latos’ curse of April is no more

Last Game
The Reds took the rubber game in the series with the Pirates to the tun of 5-0. Mat Latos was starting, so it’s little wonder he put in a shut-out performance. I mean, everyone’s been saying he sucks in April, and the calendar page has flipped. The curse is lifted for another year.

Next Game
The Reds go visit the Milwaukee Brewers. Thanks to this hot streak, the Reds roll in to town with a 14-13 record and 2.5 games back compared to the Brewers’ 12-16 fourth place situation. Bronson Arroyo (1-1 3.03 ERA) takes on Yovani Gallardo (1/3 5.79 ERA) for the first game of the series. Tune in at 8:10 for the action.

Did you know…?
The first practical typewriters was designed in Milwaukee in 1867, just 103 years before the Brewers played their first game.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
The Reds are now 5-0 this season in games played on Sunday.

Boxscore

I guess Mat Latos really is a better pitcher in May than April.

In his first start in May, Latos, who is horrible, just horrible, in his career in April, had his best start as a Cincinnati Red. He struck out a career high 11 over the course of 6 innings, allowing no runs, 2 hits and 3 walks. Plus, he did all this while pitching with the dreaded flu-like symptoms.

“I was not feeling good at all this morning,” he said. “I woke up throwing up. It wasn’t pretty.”

Latos was still feeling queasy when he took the mound. It didn’t help that the first inning lasted a long time.

“I thought I was going to throw up a couple of times,” Latos said.

Eww. That would’ve been gross. I do wonder if that’s ever happened on a pitching mound in the middle of a game. That would certainly get you on SportsCenter.

The Reds’ relievers have been lights out lately, having pitched 21 2/3 innings of scoreless baseball. They were no different today. After taking over for the ailing Latos after the 6th, they continued the shutout and preserved the win.

The offense was good, too, and got off to an early start. Joey Votto drove in Drew Stubbs in the first inning of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ starter Charlie Morton. Todd Frazier, who must have been starting instead of Willie Harris due to a clerical error, hit a home run in the second to make it 2-0. And then Drew Stubbs made it 4-0 with a home run in the 3rd.

The win puts the Reds one game back over .500 at 14-13. They take the series with the Pirates and will head to Milwaukee to face the Brewers tomorrow. Bronson Arroyo will go for the Reds with Yavani Gallardo starting for the Brewers at 8:10pm EDT.

That was a great game last night, wasn’t it?

Johnny Cueto was awesome. Again. And the offense actually showed up. It felt like it was the first time in forever that the offense wasn’t rained out. How nice that it gave the Cincinnati Reds their first time above .500 since April 8.

Cueto continues to show himself as the best home-grown Reds pitcher since Tom Browning. Granted, that may sound like damning him with faint praise considering the team’s horrendous track record at developing starting pitching. But Cueto’s pitching like an ace. His complete game effort against the Pittsburgh Pirates was just another exhibit in that case. On the night, his line was 9 innings, 1 run, 7 hits, and 4 strikeouts.

The offense was lead by three home runs, one each from Zack Cozart, Drew Stubbs, and Jay Bruce. Of course, by that point, the Reds were already ahead 3-1 thanks to some timely hitting that we haven’t seen the team do much of this year.

Hopefully that will continue tonight when Mike Leake faces James McDonald at 7:05pm EDT.
