Daily Brief: Reds’ winning streak grows to 5

Last Game
The Reds extended their winning streak to 5 last night with a 1-2 win over the Braves. Todd Frazier took his turn being the hero in this one with a walk-off home run.

Next Game
Tonight the Reds go for the sweep of the four-game series at 7:10 p.m. Homer Bailey (2-3, 4.34 ERA) faces off against Randall Delgado (2-4, 4.26 ERA). Bailey is coming off a strong start against the Yankees last Saturday.

Feeling Chipper
Today’s the day they stop stepping on the Chipper Jones’ commemorative bases and actually hand one over to the guy. Before the game tonight, there will be a ceremony with Scott Rolen and Walt Jocketty. Here’s hoping the good karma from this celebration of the opponent continues tonight.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
Aroldis Chapman got the win last night. His line on the season so far: 24.1 IP, 7 H, 7 BB, 43 K.

The Cincinnati Reds have a winning streak. Sure, it might end with their next game, but right now, they’ve won 4 games in a row for their longest such streak of 2012. The streak has also pushed them to their best record: 23-19, 4 games over .500.

Tonight Mat Latos turned in another fine outing to pick up his 3rd win. If he can pitch like this on a regular basis, the 2012 Reds are going to look very good. Over 7 innings, Latos allowed 5 hits, 2 walks, and 2 runs. Oh, and he struck out 8. A very impressive night.

The offense was impressive, too. The Atlanta Braves sent out Brandon Beachy to start, he of the lowest ERA in the majors. Probably not any more, not after the Reds connected for 3 home runs and 4 runs off of him.

Brandon Phillips had a multi-home run game, hitting a 2-run shot in the 1st and a solo shot in the 4th. Zack Cozart contributed his own solo home run off Beachy in the 3rd.

That was all the offense the Reds got, and it was all they needed, thanks to Latos, Logan Ondrusek, and new closer Aroldis Chapman. I’ve written about how I think the Reds are mishandling Chapman, but even I can admit that Chapman’s likely to be very, very good in that game finishing role. He was against the Braves last night when he picked up his second save. His line? 1 inning, 2 strikeouts, no hits, and no runs. And lots of pitches at 100 miles per hour. He’s so much fun to watch. And clearly, that arrest had no affect on his ability.

The Reds play the third of four against the Braves today at 7:10pm EDT. Tommy Hanson will start against Bronson Arroyo.

Daily Brief: Arroyo’s 300th start

Last Game
The Reds beat the Braves, 3-4. It’s the fourth win in a row, and it guarantees the Reds cannot lose the four-game series. Mat Latos was awesome, including 8 Ks in 7 innings. Brandon Phillips was awesome, including going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Next Game
Game three of the series commences tonight at 7:10 p.m. Bronson Arroyo (2-2, 3.46 ERA) goes against Tommy Hanson (5-3, 3.31 ERA).

300 Starts for Arroyo
Arroyo’s start tonight will be the 300th start of his career. Of which, 210 have been with the Reds. Of which, 150 haven’t involved any verbalized wishing to still be back in Boston.

I’ve had my share of fun picking on Bronson Arroyo over the years, but even I will acknowledge that’s a big contribution to have made to the team. The Reds have been better off for his presence, even if it did come at the expense of Wily Mo Peña.

Daily Brief: The guy who caught two home runs in a row

Last Game
The Reds beat the Braves 1-5. Mike Leake finally got a win, plus his first career home run. If ever Dusty was going to let a guy bat and then replace him in the defensive part of the inning, this is the guy to do it with. But, no, Dusty didn’t do that with Leake last night.

Next Game
The series with the Braves at Great American Ball Park continues tonight at 7:10 p.m. Mat Latos (2-2, 4.63 ERA) takes on Brandon Beachy (5-1, 1.33 ERA) in a matchup that does not favor him as well as Leake’s did last night. At least the bullpen is rested.

Give that Guy an Honorary Contract
Unusual enough to get back to back home runs out of your pitcher and lead-off hitter, but to have both of those home run balls caught by the same guy is something Hollywood would make up.

And yet, 20-year old Caleb Lloyd, a Thomas More College student, was the lucky recipient of both of those home run balls. You can catch the video here (HT Cincinnati Reds Blog).

Lost in all this stroke of lightning talk is the fact that these were just the first two of three back-to-back-to-back home runs.

The guy going against Latos tonight has the best ERA for a starter in all of baseball. He has Johnny Cueto beat by 0.64.

Aroldis Chapman arrested

Apparently, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Aroldis Chapman can’t drive 55.

Police said Chapman, 24, was pulled over for speeding in a black 2010 Mercedes S63 on Interstate 71 North near Interstate 270 at about 12:42 a.m.

Chapman was arrested after the officer discovered he had a suspended Kentucky driver’s license, according to a police report.

Chapman was released on bond and has a court date scheduled for June 6. He has already discussed his situation with the Reds, including general manager Walt Jocketty and manager Dusty Baker.

It may feel like it’s been a while since the Reds have had a player arrested, but the most recent one was just last year on April 17, 200 when Mike Leake was arrested for shoplifting. Along with Leake, Chapman joins the illustrious ranks of former arrested Reds Daniel Ray Herrera, Brian “Love” Shackleford, and Ryan “Farney” Freel who gave us two wonderful mug shots.
