Reds start a losing streak

Last Game
Last night in Milwaukee the Reds did something they haven’t done for over a month: they lost a second consecutive game. That’s a losing streak, my friends, and it hasn’t happened since July 5. Bronson Arroyo was rolling until the wheels freakin’ fell off in the sixth inning and before you know it he’s given up 5 earned runs on 10 hits. Final score: Reds 3, Brewers 6

Next Game
The 3-game series continues tonight in Miller Park at 8:10 p.m. Johnny Cueto (RHP, 14-5, 2.52 ERA) tries to knock down Mike Fiers (RHP, 5-4, 1.88 ERA). The same match-up occurred on July 22. Cueto came out the winner in that one, 1-2.

Taking BP
Brandon Phillips was finally back in the line-up last night after missing 5 games with a tweaked calf muscle. He went 0-for-5, which maybe isn’t so surprising after an extended bench-sitting.

Strangely, Phillips had been penciled in to the line-up on Saturday but was a late scratch. However, he apparently wasn’t even in consideration for the line-up Sunday before making it in last night, and the reason why seems to be kind of hush-hush. Conspiracy? Or just Dusty Baker’s “wait till he’s ready and then wait another day” policy? Either way, I hope Phillips can find his swing better tonight.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
Right-handed reliever Nick Masset, who’s been out all season with a shoulder problem, is nearing his return to the bigs. He’s made 2 rehab appearances with the Arizona Reds and 1 with the Dayton Dragons. He would have started for the Bats on Sunday, but was scratched after a rain delay.

Deals for the upcoming Reds homestand

The Reds just left for a roadtrip starting with tonight’s game against the Milwaukee Brewers, but there are a couple deals in place for when they get back.

Lower-Level Field Box Discount August 14-16
Brandon Phillips didn't have as much to do with these wins as we'd all hoped

Reds.com says:

The Reds won five of seven games on the homestand vs. the Padres and Pirates and now you can save $20. That means Lower-Level Field Box tickets (regularly $34) for the upcoming Mets series (August 14-16) are just $14!

so I guess that means they took $4 off the price for each win? Seems like an unusual number, but maybe it was in honor of Brandon Phillips’ jersey number, since he’s featured prominently on the page where you buy the tickets. Whatever the reasoning, it’s a nice deal. Go here to buy tickets.

Jay Bruce Tweet-Up August 16
But the discounted tix aren’t your only option for August 16. That same night there will also be a “JAY BRUUUUUUUCE tweetup”

What makes it a “JAY BRUUUUUUUCE tweetup” as opposed to just a “REGUUUUUUULAR tweetup”, you ask? Why, Bruce’s Twitter handle is on shirt you get with your admissions, of course.
Bruce on the Twitters

For only $25, the special #RedsTweetUp package includes:
* One Sun/Moon Deck ticket (reg $25)
* An exclusive, limited-edition Reds BRUUUUUUCE TweetUp t-shirt

Just make sure to keep an eyes on the field from time to time. It would be just too ironic for Bruce to hit a tweet-up attendee with a home run ball because they were too busy tweeting to see it coming. Go here to buy tickets.

Game 108: Pirates 6, Reds 2

Team123456789RHE

W: Burnett (14-3) L: Bailey (9-7) S: Hanrahan (32)

Boxscore

The Reds broke another winning streak yesterday afternoon by losing to the Pirates 6-2.

Hanigan just sits there and waits for it to be over withHomer Bailey has officially started a streak of his own: yesterday was his second bad outing in a row. He lasted only 4.2 innings, giving up 4 runs (earned) on 9 hits and a walk. But unlike last Tuesday, the offense could not bail him out this time and he got his seventh loss of the season.

Jose Arredondo finished the fifth without allowing a hit. Alfredo Simon pitched the next three innings and gave up 3 hits but no runs. Logan Ondrusek didn’t fare as well in the ninth: he allowed 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, but those weren’t the runs that made the difference anyway.

The Reds have been short-staffed for a while now. Joey Votto is finally almost back after arthroscopic knee surgery, and Brandon Phillips was a late scratch on Saturday, being almost ready to play after his calf tweak. Devin Mesoraco remains on the concussion DL, and apparently it was no one else’s turn to be the hero.

Only Drew Stubbs, Jay Bruce, and Ryan Ludwick even managed a single hit against AJ Burnett (each also drew a walk). Stubbs scored both of the team’s runs: one thanks to a Bruce double after a walk in the bottom of the first, and the other on a solo shot in the third.

That loss brought the Reds’ record to 66-42. The lackluster performance ends an otherwise good homestand on a low note and makes things feel worse than they really are. Today will be a better day: the Reds head to Milwaukee to take on the Brewers. Bronson Arroyo (RHP, 7-6, 3.87 ERA) faces off against Yovani Gallardo (RHP, 9-8, 3.92 ERA) at 8:10 p.m.

Shaving Marty’s head raises $100K for charity

Last Game
Yesterday the Reds snapped a 5-game winning streak by losing to the Pirates, 6-2. Reds’ starting pitcher Homer Bailey was quite hittable in his 4-run, 4.2-innings, while Pirates’ starting pitcher AJ Burnett was really on his game. You might also reasonably mention that Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips are still out, and that with them in the line-up we might be looking at a very different story. Ultimately, though, I think the Pirates just wanted it more.

Next Game
Tonight the Reds head to Milwaukee to visit the Brewers. Bronson Arroyo (RHP, 7-6, 3.87 ERA) had a pretty rough outing last time out. We’ll see if he can get back on track against Yovani Gallardo (RHP, 9-8, 3.92 ERA) and the Brew Crew. First pitch at 8:10 p.m.

Charities Benefit from Marty’s Chrome Dome
When the Reds won 10 in a row, Reds Hall of Fame radio broadcaster Marty Brennaman had to make good on his comment that he’d shave his head if the team did such a thing. But rather than just doing the shaving and getting it over with, Marty parlayed the event into an opportunity to raise money for charity. For just $20,000 in donations to the Reds Community Fund, Marty agreed to have the shaving done on the field after the game on Friday.

If you weren’t in attendance (and it looks like many people were), you can check out the video. He looks pretty good bald, though the shock of white skin that’s never seen the sun is a little surprising.

The donations far exceeded the request: the tally was more like $50,000. Plus, then Charlie Sheen decided the match the number this weekend, for a total of $100,000 going to the Reds Community Fund.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
Joey Votto is going on the roadtrip to Milwaukee and then Chicago, implying he’ll be playing within the next week. The Reds have won only 16 of 19 since he’s been gone.

State Farm offers chance to win WS tix

Remember that game where you were a polar bear hitting penguins for distance? As you no-doubt noticed from the ads that are in regular rotation here and at other baseball sites, State Farm is again offering an opportunity for you to win World Series tickets by playing the Go to Bat game.

The game itself is a home-run hitting contest. The higher your score, the better your chance to win the World Series tickets. You could dedicate your Angry Birds time to this game instead and add “chance to go to the big game” to the long list of benefits you already get from playing.

Here’s Ohio-native and Reds fan John Legend talking about this program. I’m not really sure how the list of presidents ties in to the rest of the stuff, but everyone likes to watch a video, right?
