A Weaver On Cincinnati’s Radar?
It's not the Weaver some people want, but in a story on DallasNews.com, Evan Grant hypothesizes that Jered Weaver could land with Cincinnati:
Jayson in Arlington: Do the Rangers go after Jared Weaver if they fail to lure the Rocket to Arlington? Or do they really need to take a risk on him? I think Rupe or Dominguez would be just as good, if not better bets. Thanks Evan. Great work.
Evan Grant: I don't think so. It sounds to me like Weaver will end up with the Los Angeles Angels or Cincinnati. The Rangers would be willing to make a pitch for Clemens because, well, he's Clemens and he'd basically pay for himself in increased revenue. Weaver would not. It would not be quite the no-risk situation of Clemens.
If he hadn't just been drafted in 2004 and with the flurry of activity we've seen out of our team the last few days, they almost could have already gotten young Weaver and snuck him through between Quinton McCracken and Tuffy Rhodes while everyone was making more Bong jokes.
JEFF Weaver, not Jared Mama… Jared is his younger brother who is in the Angels minor league system and very close to breaking in on the scene at just 22 years of age.
They did probably mean Jeff; the story doesn’t make a whole ton of sense as written. Nevertheless, it *IS* written that way; check the link.
Well its pretty darn interesting they are saying the Reds are in the Weaver derby, but that could very well be based on Kullman’s comments a week or 2 ago where he said they’d consider him if he’d come down to a 1 year + option deal. I think the Angels now have a 2 year + club option deal on the table which he has until tomorrow to accept or decline. Its a reasonable offer so I am guessing he’ll take it, unless there are private competitive bids we don’t know about yet.
If the speculation is based on comments from a couple weeks ago, it seems strange to me that I’m suddenly seeing references to it just now. Take this article on ocregister.com, for example.

haha, well I don’t know where they are getting those “rumors” from if they are recent, but I do think the rumors are from when Kullman dropped Weaver’s name in the Dayton Daily News last week. I haven’t heard anything from Krivsky about Weaver, BUT he did say on MLB radio there were a couple of free agents still out there that they might go after…
I guess anything is possible. Maybe thse guys have been reading my blog which, as you know, has been dedicated to acquiring Jeff Weaver this off season.
What?? You mean YOU like Weaver? 😛
I had a dream about Weaver last night. I’ll have to post it.
Jeff Weaver was signed by the Angels at $8.5 million for one year. We probably could’ve afforded that, but he does give up a lot of homers and his success seems like it’d be a boom or bust signing.
As for his little brother, I can’t see the Angels trading him. He would’ve been the top pitcher taken in the 2004, probably the top player overall, if Scott Boras wasn’t his agent.
