Somewhere, Adam Dunn is Banging His Head Against a Wall
It does my heart good to hear Dusty Baker say stupid things. It helps me put my own problems into perspective.
Lest you think that “clogging up the base paths” nonsense that he sputtered while in Chicago stayed behind with the deep-dish pizza, Dusty’s been taking again:
“I’m big on driving in runs and scoring runs,” Baker said. “Guys in the middle should score about close to equal to what they drive in. On-base percentage, that’s fine and dandy. But a lot of times guys get so much into on-base percentage that they cease to swing. It’s becoming a little bit out of control.
“What you do is run the pitcher’s count up, that helps,” Baker said. “You put him in the stretch, that helps. But your job in the middle is to either score them or drive them in. The name of the game is scoring runs. Sometimes, you get so caught up in on-base percentage that you’re clogging up the bases.”
Thanks, RLN, for pointing out the link.
Fire Joe Morgan had a field day with that one.
To early to worry about the lineup’s. Games have not even started yet.
Oh,
Congrats to Ryan and Cristy Freel on the 3rd child on the way.

I don’t care what Dusty says… its the results on the field that matter. Some of our guys, particularly Dunn, have a tendency to take too many pitches. Sure I like high OBP don’t get me wrong, but I don’t like our players constantly falling behind in the count either. Anyhow, what does it matter what he says to the media? Its how he affects the players the most, and how it translates on the field. I will withold judgement… but I can definitely understand how Baker became so hated in Chicago, because he makes very bold comments that can easily be used against him. You can bet if the reds get shut out in an early game the blog-o-sphere will be quick to pull that clogging up the bases quote.
Thanks for the Fire Joe Morgan link, BubbaFan. Hilarious!
Baker has a lot to prove. Sure he had success in San Francisco, but that was years ago. He’s since failed spectacularly in Chicago. No games have been played, so all people can judge him on are his comments. And he comes across as a big giant moron, not a successful baseball manager.
