Reds Fire Krivsky

The end of the Kriv-dawg era is upon us. The Reds replaced Wayne Krivsky with Walt Jocketty today. Jocketty, former St. Louis Cardinals GM and personal friend of owner Bob Castellini, was hired by the team as a special adviser before the season.

I’m in a day of meeting hell and can’t take the time to do the proper research on this to form an educated opinion. But, HOLY CRAP! I’d say that does more to demonstrate the team’s desire for change than eating Castro’s contract.

    I think “Holy crap” was my initial response, too, although with something a little more expletive-like there instead of “crap.”

    Surprising, yet not surprising, move. Krivsky has been worthless as a GM since bringing in Phillips and Arroyo years ago. (Some might mention Hamilton, but that had nothing to do with Krivsky. That was all due to Narron, so it doesn’t count.) But I didn’t expect the firing so early.

    The end result is that the Reds just improved their team by turning one of their weakest positions into a strength.

    Mark Sheldon from mlb.com had this quote from Bob Castellini in an article on the Reds’ official site: “We had a lousy season last year and we’re starting this season not very well. We felt it was time for a change.”

    I think Joe Kay’s article for the AP said it best. This is a move made by a franchise looking for direction. The Reds have been through two owners, four managers and an interim manager in the last six years. That instability is part of the reason haven’t had a winning record since 2000. Kay says that Jocketty’s job will be to set a course for an impatient owner, and I think Joe’s hit the nail on the head.

    The writing’s been on the wall for this move since Castellini hired Jocketty, I’m just surprised it happened as quickly as it has.

    Fay had some interesting points. He thinks part of the problem with Krivsky was those awful contracts that the Reds have been forced to eat. Stanton, Cormier, Castro. Plus, Krivsky wasn’t getting along with Jocketty.

    He also thinks a big issue was the way Krivsky drove out Johnny Almaraz. He’s the one who signed Cueto. They saw him as a future GM, but he quit because he couldn’t get along with Krivsky.

    Though I’m not sure Jocketty will be any better. I’m particularly troubled by the rumors that he was fired because he hated stat guys.
