Kepp Fractures Knee
Jeff Keppinger, the guy keeping the spot between second and third warm for Gonzalez and the hottest-hitting guy on the Reds’ roster, was hit in the knee with a ball tonight after he broke his bat fouling it off. The impact resulted in a fractured patella, taking him out for who knows how long.
In news that seems unrelated to the untrained eye, former Cubs shortstop Neifi Perez was suspended for 80 games on August 3 last year.
Get well soon, Kepp.
And the Reds, for the second game in a row, win one that history suggests may well have ended up in the loss column.
Last year, Weathers would have been out there in the ninth, and the homer he allowed in the eighth would have been Dan Uggla hitting a two-run shot in the ninth after Heredia’s walk to win the game for the Marlins.
But this year, Cordero is the closer, so Weathers pitches the eighth and it’s a harmless solo shot he gives up. Then in the ninth Heredia walks, but it’s not Weathers out there, it’s Cordero, so it’s 5-3 groundout, another 5-3 groundout, swinging K of Uggla to end it, and this one belongs to the Reds.
Too bad about Keppinger. Broken bat foul ball off his leg, what rotten luck. That’s probably gonna cost the Reds his services for several weeks. Be interesting to see who gets called up. Janish got pulled from the Bats’ game in the eighth inning Tusday so my money’s on him.
