Brewers Rest-of-the-Season Preview

Where do the Brewers go from here? Photo via Yahoo! SportsI realize that now that we’re a couple week into the season it’s a little late to be talking team previews. But this is a particularly polished and in-depth preview of the Brewers’ 2009 season at The View from the Dugout.

After a couple years of being predicted “The Sleeper” team, the Brewers’ relationship with C.C. Sabathia last season is now over, and Ben Sheets is out of the picture as well. What’s in store for this team struggling to find their shape? So far, a 4-8 record, but the season is long.

    Losing an ace like Sabathia would be a big blow to any team’s starting rotation. But it’s the Brewers’ bullpen that I think will do them in.

    They lost Gagne and needed a closer, so they pulled a page from the book of a certain former Reds GM and brought in a 42-year old guy to fill the position. I mean, come on…do I need to remind Reds fans about guys like Stanton and Mercker and Hammond and Rick White? Do I really? Hoffman’s a future Hall of Famer, but at age 42 his wheels could come off at any time.

    I also think a lot of preseason prognosticators have overestimated many of their other relievers. Carlos Villanueva? Jorge Julio? David Riske? Really? Yeah. Have fun with that. And do I really need to say anything to Reds fans about Todd Coffey?

    Speaking of talking to Reds fans – the Brew Crew will hit a lot of homers and they’ll score a lot of runs. But we remember that the Reds led the NL in runs scored in 2004 and finished ten games below .500 anyway, don’t we? And we know all about the dangers of building an offense around the long ball, don’t we? (Of course we do, we get a reminder every time we face Roy Oswalt!)

    Then there’s their defense. I posted about that here on RHM last season, and they still have the same lineup. They still think Ricky Weeks, a guy who couldn’t catch a cold in a drafty igloo, is a major league second baseman. Really? Have fun with that, too.

    And they don’t have nearly enough starting pitching now that CC and Sheets are gone. I expect they’re gonna spend the year chasing the Cardinals, Cubs, and Reds.
