Give Up After 2 Weeks
After a grueling 15 days without a pitching coach, the Cincinnati Reds took a page from the Nobel Peace Prize committee and hired someone earlier than necessary. Bryan Price, formerly of the Arizona Diamondbacks, will be the pitching coach for next year’s losing effort.
Many Reds fans had speculated that the Reds might pursue Dave Duncan, whose contract ends with the St. Louis Cardinals after this season. Of course, the Reds would have to, you know, interview people instead of hiring the first moron who they could lure into Cincinnati.
All I can figure is that with the Arizona Fall League stating, the Reds were going crazy with the idea of not having a pitching coach. I mean, how are the pitchers going know that they’re supposed to throw strikes instead of balls.
Jocketty had said at the end of the season they wanted to act fast (they had already targeted Price), and they hired a guy who, unlike this poster, is not a moron but an experienced, successful and decorated pitching coach who was wanted by EVERY team that had a PC vacancy. Price also turned down offers from the Brewers and Marlins.
And, yes, the Reds did want someone fast. Not for the AFL, but because their instructional league is underway and Price is in charge of the organization’s pitching. He goes to work immediately. He will be instituting an organization-wide pitching program and philosophy from the majors to the lowest rung of the minors.
To my knowledge, it has been at least 30 years since the organization had one person instituting philosophy top to bottom. Price was a GREAT hire and a coup for the Reds.
Aw, Mr. Redlegs, this poster doesn’t think you’re a moron, just forgetful. O’Brien put an organization-wide pitching program in place.

Clearly Zeldink was referencing Dusty Baker with the “first moron who they could lure into Cincinnati” comment; there’s no reason to be so snippy. And the point about hiring people WAAAAAY before they’re really necessary stands.
Price might be the best friggin’ pitching coach in the world but they didn’t have to hire him yet. Even if just to give the illusion of doing a thoughtful, exhaustive search, they could have waited until after the post-season was over.
