I'm the most important thing,
You put me before cakes and rings.
I come before the break you take,
You even put me before the maker.
Who am I?

what’s a coffee ring?
Two kinds of coffee rings I’m aware of. One is the circular stain that results from putting your mug down so roughly that the coffee inside slops down the sides. The other is a kind of pastry. A flat ring meant to be served with coffee. Also called coffee cake. (Though it’s more like very sweet bread than like cake.)
