Finally: Something New to Talk About

Hey, there's always a bright side, even to a rough outing by Aaron Harang. Finally, the beat reporters can stop trying to come up with different ways to say “boy, this bullpen stinks.”

Though, now that I think about it, the bullpen hasn't had a chance to outstink Harang yet. It could still be more of the same.

On an unrelated note, who hates the idea of a Big 10 network besides me? I'm not a Big 10 fan by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll tune in to see a Purdue game on Saturdays. I've got a sinking feeling my casual college football following is soon to be at an end.

And while we're talking about ideas we hate, who was it who was talking about the length of Mike Stanton's contract? Ah, here it is, thank you John Fay. Stanton's entitled to $3 million next year, plus an option for 2009 with a $500,000 buyout. Ugh.

Woo, Adam Dunn just hit a 2-run homer. Do we really want to let this guy go free agent after this season just so Krivsky can lock up eight more Stanton's for the next three years?

Holy crap, Zambrano has been extended by the Cubs for FIVE years??

    Damn, he’s not [em]that[/em] good.

  2. Red Hot Mama says:

Brandon Phillips hits another homer to bring the game within reach at 4-5. I tell you what, that kid is going to have a video game named after him someday.

  3. Zeldink says:

Time to bring in Stanton to put it out of reach, right?

Sigh, I wish he weren’t on the team anymore.

  4. Red Hot Mama says:

Jeff Conine knocks in the tying run. Yippee!

Though I do feel sort of odd about the Reds doing their part to help the Cubs, I’m going to forget about that and enjoy the sixth inning. It might all change in the next inning anyway.

Ah, the Brewers are up again, 5-6. But it’s still in reach! It can still be done.

My brother’s Special Olympics team played in the state tournament today (alas, not *our* SO team, since we dropped out after moving (though I don’t think we’ll be able to resist playing volleyball (even though we’ll have to traverse three counties to get to practices))), and it was a losing effort. Nevertheless, they put in a good showing and played the entire regulation time and didn’t even lose by the mercy rule. 8-5 for the Cardinals today.

There was a reporter from Channel 8 there filming them like crazy. If you’re in the greater Indianapolis area, check out the 6 o’clock news and you might just see my brother at first base.

Oh, hi, Zeldink! I didn’t notice your post before.

Dunner just made a bonehead baserunning mistake. Hopefully it did nothing worse than set up Javy for a grand slam.

  7. Red Hot Mama says:

    JAVY!!!

It’s not a GS, but it’s pretty awesome. Reds up 7-6.

Here’s another reason why it’s a great day: the CTS was cleaning out the car (which he does regularly because he truly is a fantastic husband) where he discovered a Gameboy game of our son’s that’s been missing for over a year.

Probably doesn’t seem like a big deal to anyone else, but our son would still bring it up every once in a while, saying, “man, I wish I could play that Curious George game again…” It was heartbreaking.

Kepp’s aboard in the top of the ninth with no outs.

  10. Red Hot Mama says:

The resounding cheers of the crowd tell me that Dunn struck out. One away and a runner on first.

  11. Red Hot Mama says:

Double play puts Weathers on the mound to protect a one-run lead in the bottom of the ninth. Gulp.

  12. Red Hot Mama says:

Base hit to lead off the bottom of the ninth. Yipes.

  13. Red Hot Mama says:

Successful sacrifice by Craig Counsell to move the runner to second. Eek.

  14. Red Hot Mama says:

Two away with a runner on second. Corey “Reds Killer” Hart at the plate. Yikes.

  15. Red Hot Mama says:

Hart takes the ball on the elbow. Ouch!

Fielder coming to the plate. Sigh.

  16. Red Hot Mama says:

Fielder grounds out to second. Phillips makes an easy toss to first, and the game is over.

    Yippee!!!

Cleaning the car, huh? What a productive thing to do on a Sunday. I myself prefer to have Sunday evening for lazy time, although that doesn’t happen often.

Maybe tonight, as I’ve finished some chores early.

So, how ’bout them Reds? I was actually excited to see them win this one. Emotional involvement in a meaningless game this late was a surprise, but a pleasant one.
