Welcome Back Lizard; Get Well Soon Ross
According to Reds.com, the Reds brought Elizardo Ramirez up from Class A Dayton today. The Lizard was optioned to Dayton before the All-Star break to keep him active while the major leaguers lounged around for a few days.
To make room on the roster, David Ross was put on the 15-day DL, which really just delays the real decision for a few days. If someone is to be sent down when Ross comes back, you'd have to guess it would be Jason Standridge, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to replace a pitcher with a catcher. I'm sure that Wayne Krivsky is trying to deal Jason LaRue and/or Javier Valentín before then.
Why not? They just replaced a catcher with a pitcher, didn’t they? 🙂
But you’re right – I agree – this is punting a decision for now. Without looking, I’ll guess that they probably DL’ed Ross retroactive to the date of the injury, which means it won’t be that long before he’s eligible to come off the DL.
Meanwhile, Claussen will also be eligible to return soon.
So there are a couple of guys currently on the 25-man roster whose tickets out of town are already printed up. Whether it’s by trade, DFA, optioned to Louisville, or being fed to the carp that hang out in the waters beneath the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge, remains to be seen. But obviously, somebody’s going to be the loser in a numbers game here.
I hope those carp have an appetite for Sauteed Standridge and Microwaved Mays, because barring a trade such as you mentioned, my guess is that that’s what they’re likely to be fed.
What I really want to happen is for someone to replace Mays. I hadn’t thought about Claussen in a while. I hope he’s actually the better alternative when he returns.
