The Reds took the first game in the series against the Milwaukee Brewers. Bronson Arroyo gave up only one run before his team came to support him to the tune of 5 runs. They tacked on one more in the ninth to make the final score 6-1.
Next Game
The Reds continue the series with the Brewers at 8:10 p.m. ET. Homer Bailey (1-2, 3.77 ERA) takes the mound for the Reds against Yovani Gallardo (1-3, 5.79 ERA).
What a Relief
The Reds bullpen leads the National League. It hasn’t given up a run in 8 games (23 1/3 innings).

The Reds’ pitchers’ 17 strikeouts in Sunday’s game tied the franchise record for strikeouts in a 9-inning game. The last time that many Ks were recorded in 9-innings was May 23, 2008 when Edison Volquez and crew did it against the Padres.

The Reds took the rubber game in the series with the Pirates to the tun of 5-0. Mat Latos was starting, so it’s little wonder he put in a shut-out performance. I mean, everyone’s been saying he sucks in April, and the calendar page has flipped. The curse is lifted for another year.
Next Game
The Reds go visit the Milwaukee Brewers. Thanks to this hot streak, the Reds roll in to town with a 14-13 record and 2.5 games back compared to the Brewers’ 12-16 fourth place situation. Bronson Arroyo (1-1 3.03 ERA) takes on Yovani Gallardo (1/3 5.79 ERA) for the first game of the series. Tune in at 8:10 for the action.
Did you know…?
The first practical typewriters was designed in Milwaukee in 1867, just 103 years before the Brewers played their first game.

Despite what it looked like for the first eight innings, the Reds actually pulled out a win against the Cubs yesterday 3-4. Since the first game of the series was cancelled due to rain, the win gave the Reds a split in what turned out to be a two-game series.
Next Game
The Reds head to Pittsburgh to visit lovely PNC park and take on the Pirates this evening at 7:05 p.m. Johnny Cueto seems like overkill against a Pirates team that just gave up 25 runs in its series with the Cardinals, but given the disappearing act the Reds’ offense likes to pull, that may not be the case at all. After all, the Pirates also scored 16 in that three-game series.
The Offensive Threat in Louisville
Paul Janish, long derided for being merely an excellent defensive shortstop and not a threat at the plate (Reds fans were spoiled by Larkin), is leading the AAA Louisville Bats in AVG. He’s hitting .315, while the second-place guy is only hitting .255.

The Reds Hall of Fame is inducting the late John Reilly this year. Reilly sported a .918 OPS in 1884, plus a real nice mustache.

The Reds lost to the Cubs 3-1. Bronson Arroyo wasn’t Badroyo bad, but he ought to know that you can’t give up three runs when all you have is the likes of Jay Bruce and Joey Votto to support you. Also, someone turned all the Cubs into defensive warlocks for one game.
Next Game
An off day, a rain out, a really crappy game, and now a day game. Hope you office-dwellers didn’t want to see this one: Homer Bailey against Ryan Dempster at 12:35 p.m.
That Elusive “Winning” Word
Despite getting to .500 five times this season, the Reds haven’t not been above .500 since April 8 when they were 2-1 in the first series against the Marlins.

It’s Homer Bailey’s 26th birthday. Billboard’s number 1 song the week he was born was Robert Palmer’s Addicted to Love.

Reds fans’ unwanted vacation from baseball was extended yesterday when severe storms forced the game to be canceled. If you had a ticket, check out the rain check information.
Next Game
See yesterday’s brief: it’s still Bronson Arroyo against Jeff Samardzija, who is on really long rest now.
Rookie Success League in Clermont County
At noon today Jay Bruce will join Reds CEO Bob Castellini in a press conference to promote the new Reds Rookie Success League starting up in Clermont County next month. The group will be renovating a field with the support of Bruce and the Reds Community Fund.
What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
When Joey Votto hits his next home run while playing first base, it will put him alone in fourth place on the Reds’ all-time list for home runs by a first baseman. Currently, he’s tied with Sean Casey.
