36 Days Left to Vote Votto

MLB announced the current standings in the NL All-Star voting today, and the best damn first baseman in the league didn’t even crack the top ten. If you’ve been sitting back thinking that his greatness will transcend without you taking action, this should be a wake-up call for you.

Only YOU can put Joey Votto on the starting line-up card for the All-Star game. Vote, vote, vote!

You can vote online 25 times per email address.

Despite the current standings, there’s lots of good news in the Vote Votto movement. Check out the @VoteVotto Twitter account and the #VoteVotto tag. Will someone have already put up a Facebook page by the time I write my Vote Votto post for tomorrow?

One thing that’s definitely happening tomorrow is the VoteVotto Lunch. From one of those MLBlogs:

At 12:30pm ET tomorrow (Wednesday, May 26), join me and several of my Twitter friends as we enjoy a few minutes of our lunch-break voting Joey Votto to the National League All-Star team.

You can vote up to 25 times until July 1, so the plan is to do just that. Click HERE to vote.

Join me (Twitter.com/jamieblog) on Twitter at 12:30pm ET. Report in and let me know what you’re having for lunch, and then check back when you’re finished voting.

Before tomorrow night’s game, I’ll post the Twitter names of those who participated (and how many times they voted). I’ll also post who had the yummiest lunch.

(If you’re not into Twitter, just send me an email instead jramsey@reds.com)

The Daily Brief: Tied for First

Last Game
The Cincinnati Reds started a 4-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday, and also finally caught up to the St. Louis Cardinals in number of games played. Thanks to their 7-5 win over the Pirates, the Reds are now tied for first place. Aaron Harang was good enough to get the win, although his single and then later scoring from 1st base in the 4th may have been more important than his mediocre start. It’s always fun to see the pitcher hit, and it’s even more fun to see the pitcher run. Hey, at least Harang’s faster than Bengie Molina.

Next Game
The Reds play the second game of the series against the Pirates tonight at 7:10pm EDT. Mike Leake will take on Paul Maholm.

Bailey to the Disabled List
Yesterday, the Reds placed Homer Bailey on the 15 day disabled list and called up reliever Enerio Del Rosario.

Bailey wasn’t exactly happy about the move, although being blindsided with it probably didn’t help.

“No one asked my opinion,” Bailey said. “I can understand missing one start. But I’m not a doctor.”

Considering Bailey is 24 years old, I can understand the Reds’ caution. As Redleg Nation points out, the number of pitchers–successful or not–still pitching at age 25 who first appeared in the majors at 21 is slim. Give the kid a chance to heal without doing further damage and maybe the Reds will have a chance of beating the odds.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
The Reds have won a 5-game winning streak at home, which is a season high.

Vote Votto!

Vote VottoDammit, I’m sick of the Reds’ All-Star reps being limited to those required by the rules. This ain’t NCAA and ain’t no one asking for Title IX.

Especially when Cincinnati has a legit All-Star in our midst. Joey Votto leads all NL first basemen in:

  • batting average (.307)
  • home runs (10)
  • RBI (32)
  • OPS (.950)

Plus, for an extra bonus, he’s tied for the lead in:

  • runs scored (29)
  • stolen bases (6)

So thus begins the campaign to elect Joey Votto onto the starting line-up for the All-Star Game in July. There’s still over a month of voting left, but we’re going to have to start now if we want to dethrone “Prince Albert.”

You can vote online 25 times per email address.

Don’t worry if you forget to uncheck the “Send me a bunch of MLB spam” box one of the 25 times you vote; they’re going to send you the crap either way.

After you vote, grab the badge on the right and use it with pride, and tell your friends.

The Daily Brief: Good Road Trip Ends

Last Game
In a game that the CTS found so exciting, it put him to sleep for the final 3 frames, the Reds lost the rubber game of the series with the Cardinals in shutout fashion, 6-0. Aaron Harang got the loss, but he had another solid start. Not his best, but not his worst. Of course, it would have taken more than his best against Chris Carpenter.

Next Game
The Reds return home from a good road trip, where they went 4-2. Tonight they’ll host the New York Mets, sending out Mike Leake against Oliver Perez. Perez has been murder on the Reds in the past; we’ll see if that holds up tonight at 7:10pm EDT.

Joey Votto is Awesome
Interested in finding out what’s going through the mind of Joey Votto as he stands at the plate, with his jaw clenched and his locked-in, piercing gaze at the pitcher? John Fay has the answers for you.

I spend all day preparing for each of them. It’s a culmination of all my focus throughout the day that goes into that minute and a half or however long I’m out there. I do my best to concentrate.

Others would do well to emulate him.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
The Reds are .500 at home (6-6) and 1 game under on the road (6-7).

Take the Bronson Arroyo Tour

According to LikeMe.net, when Bronson Arroyo is not busy perfecting his sweet grunge guitar licks, he’s hanging out at the Lodge Bar or the Waffle House (“When my boys come to visit me, we get up on four hours of sleep and I force them to go to Waffle House,” he says. Presumably this happens around 11:30 a.m.)

Check out his recommendations for yourself here:

And definitely let me know if you run into him at Shanghai Mama’s.
