Episode 97: Spring Break Afterglow

We’re back from our spring break trip to the city of Houston. Can you believe it’s only been more than two weeks since our last podcast? This season already has the old familiar feeling.

This week on the podcast, we talk about how all the teams are doing so far. You definitely won’t want to miss our newest feature, the Inaccurate Reenactment, where Jonny does a horrible Dusty Baker impression, and I do an even worse Bronson Arroyo one. I like to think that we’re expressing an inner character rather than thinking that we’re just horrible voice actors.

So this first battle for first place in the NL Central this year was pretty much dead on arrival, and not in the way I expected.

While the Cubs are busy trying to sweep the Reds, the Brewers (8-6) thought it would be a great time lie down for the Cardinals (11-4).

Adam Wainwright (2-1) continues to impress. Oscar Villanueva (1-2) doesn’t. Jason Isringhausen (S 6) got his sixth save, in thrilling fashion! Of course, the thrill was all self-created as he allowed two runs in the 9th to make an easy save look closer. But like so many other ninth-inning specialists, that is typical.

The Cardinals bring the brooms to Busch today at 12:15pm CDT, as Manny Parra goes against Kyle Lohse.

Well, that settles that. I guess we can call off the season now.

In the first battle for first place of the season, the Cardinals (10-4) easily handled the Brewers (8-5). Apparently, the key to defeating the Brewers is to walk Prince Fielder every time.

Who knew Braden Looper (3-0) was so mighty? He’s looking like Cy Young right now with his 2.70 ERA. Way to go Cardinals. Ride that unexpected goodness as long as you can. Dave Bush (0-3) got the loss for the Brewers, although he did turn in a quality start. It doesn’t help much when your team scores only one run.

The two play again today. Hopefully Milwaukee will win so that the final game of the series will be another first place battle. Gametime is 7:15pm CDT. Carlos Villanueva versus Adam Wainwright.

What do you do if you score 2 runs early but then spot your opponent 6 over the next three innings? If you’re the Brewers (8-4), you take out Jeff Suppan because he’s obviously not getting things done. Then you score 4 in the fourth off the Mets (5-6) to tie it and take the lead with a Rickie Weeks home run in the sixth.

Salomon Torres (2-0) gets the win with Eric Gagne (S 3) picking up his third save. Jorge Sosa (1-1) was tagged with the loss.

The Brewers have a day off before traveling to St. Louis when Dave Bush takes on Braden Looper at 7:15pm CDT on Tuesday.

Enjoy it while you can, Brewers fans! There’s never been any doubt that Ben Sheets (1-0) is awesome. Unfortunately, his career path more closely resembles that of so many broken Cubs starters. He was healthy yesterday as he delivered a complete-game shutout for the Brewers (5-1) against the hapless Giants (1-5). That’s old-school.

Milwaukee now is tied for the best record in baseball with the surprising Cardinals. Hey, both of those teams are in the NL Central. Wouldn’t it be nice if the division weren’t dismissed as the worst in the league this year? Stranger things have happened. Like frogs turning into princes or men getting pregnant.

The Brewers take a game off before heading to Cincinnati to face everyone’s favorite rookie, Johnny Cueto (1-0). Jeff Suppan goes for the Brew Crew at 7:05pm EDT on Tuesday.
