NLC’s Hottest Baller – Round 1 – Duffy vs Petrick

Chris DuffyWelcome to round 1 of the Jason Romano Commemorative NLC’s hottest blogger contest. 15 of the best-looking players on NLC (plus one fella in limbo) face off in a single-elimination tournament.

It’s been a while since I’ve gotten off my booty to put up one of these match-ups, but I’ve got to get one the ball if I want to wrap up this tournament before the All-Star Break.

Today’s match-up pits the Pirates’ Chris Duffy against Cubs’ cutie prospect Billy Petrick.

ht: 5-9 wt: 180 dob: 04/20/1980
Duffy only spent 70 games with the Pirates last season, spending many of the rest of them in Indianapolis. The CTS says its because “that boy ain’t right.” Nevertheless, he takes a couple good pictures.

Billy Petrick
ht: 6-6 wt: 240 dob: 04/29/1984
Petrick has only had the pleasure of a cup of coffee with the Cubs, pitching 9.2 innings in 8 games and racking up a 7.45 ERA. Nice smile, though.

‘Mayor’ Casey Elects New City

Former Red and Pirate Sean Casey has signed a one-year deal with the Boston Red Sox for $800,000.

I know that Casey never was the prototypical first baseman–hitting for average instead of power, but I always liked him. Heck, who didn’t? Sure, it was easy to get frustrated with him during his grounding-into-double-play phase, but he contributed more than his fair share of good memories to the Reds.

He’s accepting a backup role for the defending world champion Red Sox. Like when he was with the Tigers, it’ll be nice to see a familiar face in the playoffs. And should the worst happen and the Red Sox repeat, at least I can be happy about Casey getting a ring.

This Week’s NLC Transactions

It is Sunday again, and thus, time again for the weekly summary of player transactions conducted during the past week by teams in the National League’s Central division. At least I’m actually getting it done on Sunday this time instead of being in mid-week and a couple of days late.

On Monday, the Cardinals inked catcher Yadier “Brother of Bengie and Jose” Molina to a $15.5 million, four-year contract extension with a club option for a fifth season. The deal avoided arbitration and locked up one of the game’s best young catchers – and card-carrying member of The Flying Molina Brothers – throughout his arbitration eligibility “season.”

Meanwhile, the Cubs signed righthander Michael Wuertz to a one-year contract worth $860,000, avoiding their last arbitration-eligible case this year by more than doubling the reliever’s salary of last year.

On Tuesday, the Astros avoided arbitration by signing RHP Dave Borkowski to a one-year contract worth $800,000 plus incentives. This leaves infielder Mark Loretta and closer Jose “Papa Grande” Valverde as the Astros’ only remaining arbitration-eligible players.

On Wednesday, the Reds finalized their previously reported deal with reliever Jeremy Affeldt, designating OF Jeff Fiorentino for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Affeldt (Fiorentino subsequently was picked up by Oakland off waivers on Friday). Also on Wednesday, the Brewers signed IF Abraham Nunez (a former Pirate and Cardinal) to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

On Thursday, the Pirates signed RHP Hector Carrasco (a former Red), LHP Casey Fossum, and RHP Jaret Wright to minor league contracts with invitations to spring training.

Finally, although this has nothing to do with the NLC, Toronto on Thursday DFA’ed former Reds infielder and longtime RHM favorite Ray Olmedo. Yes, the Blue Jays let go Little Ray Ray, who now may be coming soon to a baseball team near you.

I guess getting Scott Rolen must have gone to their heads. Either that, or the knowledge that they’re doomed to rot forever in third place in the AL East, regardless of who their third baseman is. Either way, if you’ll excuse me, I’m now going to go program the new radio I bought yesterday. That is, of course, after I first RTFM!

NLC’s Hottest Baller – Round 1 – Burnett vs Ausmus

Brad AusmusWelcome to round 1 of the Jason Romano Commemorative NLC’s hottest blogger contest. 15 of the best-looking players on NLC (plus one fella in limbo) face off in a single-elimination tournament.

Today’s match-up pits Sean Burnett of the Pittsburgh Pirates against Brad Ausmus of the Houston Astros. This is an interesting match-up for many reasons. First is that neither player has a tie to the Reds, which has been the kiss of death in the tournament so far. The first contest was won by long-time Red, Jason LaRue, the second by Rick Ankiel (who is an honorary Red due to his strong outfield but poor pitching performance), the third by Brandon Phillips, and Joey Votto has pulled ahead into a comfortable lead in the fourth pairing.

Also ought to be interesting because, though Ausmus is among the older players in our bracket, it was a Google search of Burnett that made me think I’d accidentally written down the wrong name when choosing competitors. Just keep in mind that I was looking at the slightly askew cap and half-smile of his MLB profile photo, not these highlights, when I made the choice.

On his bio page on Pirates.com, this bit of minutia is the first thing you see.

Is a 2000 graduate of Wellington (FL) High School, the same school that produced Bobby Bradley, the Pirates’ 1st-round selection in 1999 (marking the first time in draft history that a major league club has used consecutive first-round selections on players from the same high school)

Maybe a good showing in the RHM hottest baller contest will help him define himself in terms of something other than his high school.

Ausmus is going to turn 39 a couple of weeks into the season, so it makes sense that he’s going to be playing the role of the backup (even on the Astros). Honestly, I’m pretty new to this blogging-about-anyone-except-the-Reds thing, so I can’t say much. Except that he photographs well.
