The Daily Brief: Heading to St. Louis with Confidence

Last Game
The Reds finished their sweep of the Astros, winning the final game 4-2. Bronson Arroyo got the win, Roy Oswalt got the loss, and the Reds are back at .500. No word on how long Dusty Baker will wait before reportedly asking again for an extension.

Next Game
Johnny Cueto takes on Brad Penny, the latest in a long line of miracles performed by Dave “Pitcher-Whisperer” Duncan, when the Reds play the St. Louis Cardinals tonight at 8:15pm EDT.

Dickerson Sprained Right Wrist Playing Baseball
Chris Dickerson has had a bum right wrist for a little while, and he injured it even more during a swing yesterday. I’d expect him to be sent to the DL and someone from Louisville called up. John Fay says outfielder Chris Heisey is a likely option, “He started slowly, but he’s hitting .295 over his last 10 games.”

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
Mike Leake is a candidate for National League Rookie of the Month, which is apparently an award, after going 2-0 with a 3.25 ERA in 4 starts.

Astros 0, Cardinals 5: Winless Ways Continue

There is one winless team left in all of Major League Baseball. Can we all take a moment to reflect and be thankful that it’s not the Cincinnati Reds?

Somehow, it’s not even the Pittsburgh Pirates. No, this year’s unlucky out-of-the-gate team is the Houston Astros. They were swept by the Giants to open the season. After that, they ran into perhaps the best team in the national league, the Phillies, and were swept by them. Yesterday, they started a series against the St. Louis Cardinals, so a win any time soon isn’t looking too promising.

It was the Cardinals’ home opener, and they had Adam Wainwright starting. The Astros never had a chance.

Albert Pujols–of course–was the offensive star for the Cardinals, driving in 4 and going 2 for 3 with his 5th homer of the year. Wainwright was brilliant, allowing no runs and striking out 7 over 8 innings. And he needed just 105 pitches to do it.

The Astros’ punch-less offense managed nothing. Zilch. They were held scoreless and had just 7 hits scattered throughout the game.

Wandy Rodriguez struggled in his start for Houston, allowing 4 runs in 4 1/3 innings. With the exception of the bullpen, the Astros truly displayed a team effort in their loss.

The Astros best chance for their first win may not come until this weekend when they face the Chicago Cubs. If not then, well, they play the Nationals at the end of May.

The Daily Brief: The First Win

Last Game
Bad-rroyo was nowhere to be seen as Bronson Arroyo lead the Reds to their first win of the season and avoided a sweep by the St. Louis Cardinals. He drove in a run, he struck out Pujols, and he smirked and furrowed his brow after getting hit in the right calf by a Colby Rasmus line drive. Jonny Gomes provided the baseball fireworks, with a walk-off rally-killer to win the game

Next Game
The Chicago Cubs travel to Cincinnati, fresh off losing a 3-game series to the Braves. Homer Bailey faces Carlo Silva at 7:10pm EDT.

Having Some Snuggie Fun
The Reds had entirely too much fun posing with the snuggie giveaway from Opening Night. Check out Nick Masset, Logan Ondrusek, Chris Dickerson, and Micah Owings mugging for the camera with the blankets with sleeves here.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
Ryan Hanigan started his first game of the year, catching for Bronson Arroyo. Hanigan caught the majority of Arroyo’s starts last year, 24 of 33.

Cardinals 1, Reds 2: Reds Finally Win One

Perhaps “finally” isn’t the most accurate description, but it sure did feel like a long, arduous journey had been completed when Jonny Gomes hit the walk-off home run of Jason Motte to give the Cincinnati Reds their first victory of the young season.

That “finally” sure wasn’t helped by the fact that the Reds hadn’t lead in any game until the 5th inning of this, the 3rd one. And even that was short-lived when Matt Holliday homered to tie it in the 7th.

But Gomes and Bronson Arroyo were the heroes. In addition to pitching 8 innings of 1-run baseball, Arroyo drove in the Reds first run. And he recorded his 1,000th strikeout of his career, getting Albert Pujols, no less.

Brad Penny was the St. Louis Cardinals starter, and it was a pitcher’s duel between him and Arroyo. Penny lasted 7 innings and allowed 1 run.

After the starters left, it looked like it was going to be a battle of the bullpens. This time, unlike the first two games, the Reds prevailed.

The Daily Brief: The Late Brief

Despite a contingent of bloggers, the Reds still lost Opening Night to the Cardinals. Daniel Herrera took the loss, although Johnny Cueto started and pitched well.

Next Game
The Reds hope to not get swept today when Bronson Arroyo takes on Brad Penny at 12:35pm EDT. You say that’s almost 2 hours ago? Well, it was a late night yesterday.

Cardinals May Be the Worst Sports in Baseball
Remember the good times everybody had when the Cardinals complained about the Reds balls toward the end of 2009? Well, apparently, they had so much fun with it that they’re bringing it back. Yes, the team blasted the Reds for their slippery balls in the media. The Reds were nonchalant and dismissive.

Dude, you guys won. Get over yourselves, and learn to play with the Reds’ slippery balls.

What to Say to Sound Smart at the Water Cooler
The record for the most losses to start a baseball season is held by the 1988 Baltimore Orioles who lost 21 before winning their first. Would it take the Reds that long to fire Dusty Baker?
