Pirates 4, Cardinals 7: Winning with Small Ball

Boxscore

The adaptive Cardinals used primarily small-ball tactics and defense to defeat the Pirates. They took advantage of five singles and a walk to score 5 runs. Then their defense and pitching made sure it held up.

St. Louis has been successful this year, taking what their given. Some days they have the home runs flying, sometimes it’s a low-scoring, pitching duel, and some days, like yesterday, they turn singles into runs. A team that follows either a small-ball or 3-run home run strategy is far too one-dimensional to do well, as the homer happy Reds have proved over the past few years.

The two teams close out their series tonight at 8:15pm EDT, with Tom Gorzelanny pitching for the Pirates and Adam Wainwright for the Cardinals.

Astros 2, Cardinals 3: Franklin Gets the Save

Boxscore

More often than not, Roy Oswalt has struggled this year. So much so, that he was given plenty of time off for this start against the Cardinals. He was better. In fact, he ended up in a pitching duel with Kyle Lohse.

Ultimately, Lohse won, thanks to a bit more offense and the power of ex-Reds in the bullpen. Ron Villone and Ryan Franklin both pitched in relief, with Franklin getting his fourth save. Amazing to see how he’s excelled in relief with St. Louis. It makes me shake me head in wonder.

The Astros travel to Milwaukee and send Brandon Backe against Manny Parra at 8:05pm EDT. Meanwhile, the Cardinals stay at home to host the Pirates, with Zach Duke starting against Todd Wellemeyer at 8:15pm EDT.

Astros 1, Cardinals 6: The Wagonmaker Keeps Pace with the Cubs

Cardinals (31-23)30021000-681

Boxscore

Adam Wainwright dominated the Astros last night, allowing three hits and one run in 8 innings. Oh yeah, and he fanned eight Astros. Should Chris Carpenter ever return, he and Wainwright would make a dynamite one-two punch for St. Louis. Of course, that’s very similar to Chicago’s refrain over last few years.

Benjie Molina and Cesar Izturis drove in the bulk of the Cardinals runs, while the Astros lone run came from a Ty Wiggington solo shot. Whenever Izturis has a good game, it seems to spell doom for whoever’s facing the Cardinals. If only he had them more than once every month or so.

Roy Oswalt, starting off 6 days rest, hopes to get things figured out tonight at 8:15pm EDT when he starts against Kyle Lohse.

Cardinals 3, Dodgers 4 (OT): Missing an Opportunity

Boxscore

The Cardinals lost out on reclaiming first place entirely for themselves when they fell to the Dodgers in extra innings.

Todd Wellemeyer turned in another solid start, and the bullpen pitched scoreless baseball until the 10th. Unfortunately, the offense never could get anything going, so the team lost and had to settle for being tied with the hated Cubs.

The Cardinals return home to host the Astros after taking Memorial Day off. Shawn Chacon will battle Braden Looper at 8:15pm EDT.

Cardinals 2, Padres 3: Live by the Homer, Die by the Homer

Team123456789RHE
Cardinals (27-21)020000000270
Padres (17-30)00000300-360
W: Bryan Corey (1-0) L: Joel Pineiro (2-3) S: Trevor Hoffman (9)

Boxscore

In their previous game, the Cardinals unleashed a home run barrage on the Padres, pummeling them for the win. That was not the case yesterday, as the Cardinal bats were silenced by a wily Greg Maddux.

There was no 12th career home run from Cesar Izturis to save them.

Joel Pineiro was okay in the loss, and the bullpen pitched scoreless baseball, but the offense sputtered. It wasn’t even a matter of missed opportunities, as only 3 St. Louis runners were stranded. Just some days you win, and some days you don’t.

Braden Looper starts next for the Cardinals, hoping for better run support than Pineiro, while the Padres counter with Chris Young at 10:05pm EDT.
