More Heads Rolling In Cinci

Breaking News:

Bucky Dent has been dismissed as the Reds' bench coach.

He's been replaced by Pat Kelly, a 51-year old veteran of the Reds' organization, who managed Double-A Chattanooga in 1993-94, and has managed a total of 12 pro teams since 1986. Kelly was most recently a scout for the Braves. As a player, he was very briefly a catcher for the Blue Jays, and also played minor league ball with the Angels, Braves and White Sox organizations.

Also, roving outfield instructor Ed Napoleon has resigned.

Napoleon was a close friend of Jerry Narron and according to the Reds' official site, declined an offer to remain in the organization.

Welcome Gosling; Get Well Soon, Stanton

Mike Stanton got to his for himself last night, but then didn't come out to pitch the next inning. We soon found out why:

CINCINNATI -- The Reds purchased the contract of left-hander Michael Gosling from Triple-A Louisville and placed left-handed reliever Mike Stanton on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday.

Stanton is suffering a pulled hammy. Lest you think it was one of those nagging injuries that had been hurting his performance all along, it appears that he actually suffered this ailment during that fateful at-bat.

He *did* make good contact, though.

Speaking of nagging injuries that might quietly be hurting our team's performance, I do hope that they're giving Bronson Arroyo a full-body MRI sometime in the near future.

Bye-Bye Milton; Later, Burton; Hello, Coffey

I thought about titling this “Celebrating Eric Milton's Triumphant Return To The Operating Room” but that's only half the story here, and it's too long for a title that only tells half the story.

We probably won't have Eric Milton to kick around anymore. He's due for Tommy John surgery on Friday, which means he's finished for the year and probably finished as a Red.

Milton was already on the DL, so we don't get to call up anybody to replace him, BUT since the Reds have also placed Jared Burton on the 15 day DL with back spasms, they do get to call up somebody for that….and that somebody is (drum roll, please) none other than Todd Coffey, who just got sent down on June 8 and would otherwise have had to stay in the minors for at least ten days. But with Burton going on the DL, the Reds can take advantage of an exception to that ten-day rule and call up Coffey anyway, which they've done.

That's the other half of the story. Except that…well, the Reds can't simply option Burton to the minors because he's a Rule 5 guy, who would have to clear waivers and be offered back to Oakland first. But if he's hurt, they can DL him, which gives him a maximum of 30 days in the minors on a rehab assignment when he comes off the DL.

Then again, the first time Milton went on the DL this year, coming out of spring training, it was for back spasms, and now he's going to have a ligament replacement in his elbow (which is what Tommy John surgery is).

So, is this Kriv-Dawg finding a creative way to get around all that Rule 5 red tape and get Burton some additional seasoning in the minors? Or should we be looking forward to the day in August when Doc kremchek looks down at the unconscious Burton on the operating room table, extends his gloved hand toward the OR nurse, and says, “Scalpel” in the usual monotone voice used by surgeons in that situation?

You decide.

Let The Shuffling Begin

There's nothing official about it on the Reds' official site yet, but Brad Salmon and DeWayne Wise are no longer listed on the active roster there, and I'm seeing reports that they've been sent down and that Josh Hamilton and Todd Coffey have been called up from Louisville and will join the team in St. Louis tomorrow for the game against the Cardinals.

Those are the facts. Want an opinion? Hamilton coming back is a good thing. Coffey, I'm not so sure about.

This is an off day for the Reds, so there's no game thread and not much else to do except perform the cyber equivalent of standing in the front window waiting to exclaim “Mama's home!” when RHM returns to resume command of this particular corner of the World Wide Web. Until then, I'm going to go play with the two new radios I bought Saturday and hope that Homer Bailey doesn't live up to his name this coming weekend (Homer, what an ironic name for a pitcher to have) unless it's with a bat in his hands.

Moving Day

Today is finally the day. I'm sitting by the phone, waiting for the call to say that we can start taking our stuff to our new house. It's been a nerve-fraying wait, and I'm looking forward to being a more patient, funny, and prolific Red Hot Mama when the boxes are unpacked.

In the meantime, you probably already know about the Reds' latest news: that the Reds optioned Todd Coffey to AAA Louisville yesterday to make room for Gary Majewski. Useful!
